Chapter 35 – Labor Day and More
Holly: Thank you Professor Porter for this breakfast. It was good and hit the spot. I know better than not to eat breakfast. Now, is there anything that I need to do for you?
Bette: Do you have those handouts for my classes? I think I need a shopping bag to carry them in. I’ll have George and Grace hand them out as I have asked both of them to be present for the first meeting of each undergraduate class. Maybe after lunch, we will go visit the classroom I’m assigned to. I will want a slide projector set up for my second-class meetings. The first-class meetings may be a little short. I’ll go over the syllabus and the requirements of the class and test schedule and the term paper requirements and then start in the actual class material in the second class. It may not take the full hour.
Holly: I think that is rather standard. Oh, and you should give the students a little of your biography as well. I think they need to know why UCLA has choose you to be their professor.
Bette: Have you been researching me, Holly?
Holly: Yes, I have. After Dean Ferguson came back in and talked to me about how lucky we were to have you on staff, I decided I needed to know who you were.
Bette: Oh my. I’m embarrassed now.
Holly: Don’t be. You have a lot to be proud of. And fortunately, you are here with people who appreciate who you are. And your wife is rather accomplished as well. She is a Golden Globe winner and has a couple of Emmy’s as well.
Bette: Well, we are both in our mature phase of our lives now. We are giving up our high-pressure lives in favor of a low key more family life. And it won’t be too very long before we both retire. And then my wife and I are going to do some traveling and some projects we have always wanted to do.
Holly: Well, it good to have you here at UCLA.
Holly walked out and asked if Bette wanted the door open. Bette asked that it be left open. Bette got out her glasses and computer and began to review the handouts and the notes for her first lectures. She then went on to prepare the lectures for her graduate student classes. She was careful to select a list of slides for each class to present to each class.
