Chapter 36 – What Do You Want?
“So, what happened that you no longer represent her?” Bette was curious to know how such a huge and important client was no longer a name on Jodi’s roster.
“She got married to that money grubbing roadie of hers and I told her manager he was bad news for her career. Of course, her manager at the time was her mother and didn’t listen to a word I said. Once the Brittany trainwreck was in full effect and wanted me to negotiate a reality show based on her newlywed status, I quit.”
“Why?” Carmen and Alice asked at the same time.
“I couldn’t in good faith continue to represent an artist who was exploiting herself for the sake of her career. It was bad enough that the paparazzi chased her all over town as it was. Then of course she was arrested for throwing her slurpee in the face of a tabloid photographer for invading her privacy while she was making a late night 7-11 run with her little sisters. It seemed hypocritical to then invite that kind of voyeurism into her home while at the same time attempting to maintain this idea that she was entitled to this normal sense of privacy. I couldn’t do it.”
“Good for you,” Kit declared. “It’s refreshing to see someone in this business have the courage to walk away from the paycheck in the name of common sense.”
Bette wasn’t entirely convinced that was necessarily the case. There’s gotta be more to the story, she thought. At that moment, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket.
“Why thank you, Kit.” Jodi responded. “Anyway, I make sure all of my clients understand that I am willing to negotiate whatever deal they are interested in, but their lifestyle choices must reflect the type of contract they want. I work very closely with each musician’s manager to insure a cohesive and successful endeavor. If there’s fighting among the ranks, it only hurts the talent.” She made eye contact with Bette as she said that. “We need to work together in order to provide excellent service focused on the best interest of the client. Above all else, I make sure my clients are well taken care of and the only way to assure that is through personal attention. I care about each and every one of them. I have their personal home and cell phone numbers and they have mine. We can contact each other at anytime from any place. I strongly believe that communication is the key to a long-lasting and successful partnership. I say partnership because that’s how I see my relationship with my clients.”

So much about this chapter. In true Jenny Schecter form, can anyone name the thinly veiled famous solo artist I based Jodi’s most famous client on? Bonus points coming your way if you can.
I’m not sure if my references to Taylor Swift and Beyonce were the original artists I had mentioned in this chapter when I first wrote it back in early 2010.
And how about that list of bands Jodi represents? LOL. All of them are fictional. But if there are actual bands in real life with any of those names, that’s rad and a complete coincidence.
Thanks for reading!!

Thanks for posting, MeLL!
Jodie knows how to impress the band. They are so lucky to have Bette to ask the right questions and to evaluate this offer. I like Yoda’s revenge :-) What a name for a band!
And my try for yor bonus question: I’d say it’s Ms Oops-I-did-it-again Spears. The court thing and the roadie i.e. dancer?
