Chapter 36 – What Do You Want?
“And Carmen?”
“I want us to perfect our craft. I think we still have a lot of work to do, so I think we need to be writing and composing new material to turn into albums. We’ve already proven we can do it without the help of a label. But touring would definitely get us out there in the public eye and create a demand which would inspire us to create more.”
“Tayo, you’ve been awfully quiet,” Jodi observed as everyone kind of giggled. “What do you want?”
Tayo looked around at everyone. With a half smile she replied, “I just wanna make love to my bass on stage.”
This made everyone laugh heartily except Alice who had a confused look on her face.
“Well, here’s what I know,” Kit began before being asked again. “I have surrounded myself with 5 of the most talented musicians I have eva’ known. I would love nothing more than to continue to make beautiful music with them,” she gave pause as she smiled up at Angus, who blushed. “Every time I’m on that stage, singing the words I have written, my heart beats to the tune that’s played. That experience of sharing my creation, no, our creation, out of our thoughts and our emotions, is just…so spectacularly fulfilling. I can’t even describe it in words. I want to feel like that every day.”
“That’s beautiful, Kit. I love your passion for your art.” Jodi acknowledged. “Bette?”
Bette was smiling at her sister’s words. She looked at Jodi. “Yes?”
“What does this wonderful group need in your opinion?”
“They need,” She paused to carefully choose her words. “to be playing by heart. For no other reason but that. No amount of money or fame or recognition is going to replace the satisfaction they will get from knowing that they are in this for their passion. For their art. For themselves. Not for anyone else.”
“I couldn’t agree more.” Jodi smiled. “That’s why I took the liberty of booking them at Spaceland in Silver Lake a week from Tuesday. When you guys return from your San Diego show, you better be ready to play again.”
“NA-UH?” Kit exclaimed as the rest of the band squealed and Bette sat with her mouth open.

So much about this chapter. In true Jenny Schecter form, can anyone name the thinly veiled famous solo artist I based Jodi’s most famous client on? Bonus points coming your way if you can.
I’m not sure if my references to Taylor Swift and Beyonce were the original artists I had mentioned in this chapter when I first wrote it back in early 2010.
And how about that list of bands Jodi represents? LOL. All of them are fictional. But if there are actual bands in real life with any of those names, that’s rad and a complete coincidence.
Thanks for reading!!
Thanks for posting, MeLL!
Jodie knows how to impress the band. They are so lucky to have Bette to ask the right questions and to evaluate this offer. I like Yoda’s revenge :-) What a name for a band!
And my try for yor bonus question: I’d say it’s Ms Oops-I-did-it-again Spears. The court thing and the roadie i.e. dancer?
Points! Happy New Year!!
Bette, you don’t want any kind of relationship with Jodi, even professional. Trust me i know that you don’t want, i read this story earlier and i know plot:)
Hahaha! No spoilers! ;-)
