Chapter 36 – What Do You Want?
Jodi had each of the band members nodding their heads to everything she was saying.
That’s very Jerry Maguire of you, was all Bette was thinking.
“If Kit and the band were to sign with you, what would your first order of business be?” Bette thought it was time to get down to brass tacks.
Jodi looked at each and every band member in the eye before directing her gaze to the business savvy brunette sitting upright in her lounge chair.
“My first order of business is to find out what Kit Porter and the Stouts want.”
“Pfft, easy. Record deal!” Alice stated emphasizing the last two words in a high-pitched voice.
“That’s not entirely true, Alice.” Kit interrupted.
“See, it’s this kind of interaction that can harm the cohesiveness I aim for. If you guys haven’t discussed what you want, and aren’t on the same page, how can I possibly help you?”
“You’re absolutely right.” Bette agreed. “Why don’t we take the time to figure it out. Kit, let’s start with you.”
“Why ‘cause she’s your sister or ‘cause she’s the lead singer?” Alice pouted.
Bette shot a look at Alice as Carmen smacked the back of her head.
“Oww!”
“Fine. Angus, we’ll start with you. What do you want?”
“I just wanna make music and be able to play gigs on a regular basis. I think the most important thing to me is to be able to go on tour. See the world. Experience that rush of being on stage and having people just respond to my art. The energy of that crowd last night was fierce. I want to be able to feel that as much as possible.”
“Good answer, Angus,” Jodi said. “How about you, Shane?”
“I love playing. But I want to be able to play and not have to do anything else. I want to do what I love and love what I do and not have to worry about doing anything else to get the rent paid. I’m with Angus. Live shows, definitely.”
“Al?” Bette queried.
“I want rent paid too. In fact, I want to be able to afford a mortgage in this town. So I think getting the music out there is important, but I think it requires signing with a label to make it happen right away. Then we can record new music and go on tour in support of the albums.”

So much about this chapter. In true Jenny Schecter form, can anyone name the thinly veiled famous solo artist I based Jodi’s most famous client on? Bonus points coming your way if you can.
I’m not sure if my references to Taylor Swift and Beyonce were the original artists I had mentioned in this chapter when I first wrote it back in early 2010.
And how about that list of bands Jodi represents? LOL. All of them are fictional. But if there are actual bands in real life with any of those names, that’s rad and a complete coincidence.
Thanks for reading!!
Thanks for posting, MeLL!
Jodie knows how to impress the band. They are so lucky to have Bette to ask the right questions and to evaluate this offer. I like Yoda’s revenge :-) What a name for a band!
And my try for yor bonus question: I’d say it’s Ms Oops-I-did-it-again Spears. The court thing and the roadie i.e. dancer?
Points! Happy New Year!!
Bette, you don’t want any kind of relationship with Jodi, even professional. Trust me i know that you don’t want, i read this story earlier and i know plot:)
Hahaha! No spoilers! ;-)
