Chapter 4 – The Doctor Visit
Bette: Now your mom and I will talk to you at some other point about relationships and life at college. But let me tell you what you can expect today. First, we will probably meet with Dr Wilson and one of her colleagues and have a general introduction. Then a nurse will take you to an examination room and interview you about your general overall health. You need to answer the question honestly and fully. Do not withhold information from your medical professionals. If you are having monthly menstrual cramps, tell them about that. If you have been sexually active, you need to tell them about that. If you have never had sex, you need to tell them about that. These people will not judge you. You are here to get assistance to live a normal healthy life. They are interested in your well-being and that is all they are interested in.
Tina: Once the interview is over, they will give you a gown usually made of paper and tell you to remove all your clothes and put on the gown. They will then leave the room and give you about 10 minutes to do that. Then a doctor and a nurse will come in and preform an examination. They will exam your lady parts both upper and lower. They will explain to you what they are doing and instruct you on what you should do. Just follow their instructions and it will go very quickly. Once they are finished, they will tell you to dress and then come to the doctor’s office where they will talk to you about their findings and the subjects I mentioned before.
Bette: Angie, your Mama and I will be getting the very same examination as you are getting. But we will have to get some blood work done and a mammogram. You probably will not have a mammogram for several years yet. Then we will have our consultation with the doctor. Because we are married, we will have our consultation together, but our exams will be separate. Do you have any questions?
Angie: It’s a lot to think about. Why are you guys getting exams?
Tina: We want to live a long life. We want to be around when you and Daniel start families of your own. In order to do that, we see the doctor periodically to get check out to make sure everything is normal. And if it isn’t, then we take measures to get back to normal. The human body is fragile and things which go wrong or feel unusual, it should not be ignored. This a one of those checkup sessions to make sure everything is working as it should. And since we are moving back to California, we needed to reestablish a relationship with Dr. Wilson. She delivered you, you know. But I understand she is going to retire soon, so she is going to introduce us to a new doctor. We will have someone to call on when she retires. Dr Wilson is not only a doctor; she is our friend.
