    Chapter 5

(Bette) It’s very strange to be having such a direct conversation with you about this. This is something we would never talk about

    (Tina) Well maybe we should

Bette looks down at her wine glass.

(Bette) Yes, I’m still hung up on you. I haven’t really acknowledged that to myself in a long time, but yes

They smile sadly at each other.

(Bette) Once you’ve experienced a love like that it’s hard to settle for anything else. Even after the mess we made of it

Tina breaks eye contact and has a sip of her wine and Bette watches her.

(Bette) I’m surprised you haven’t asked about what happened. You must want to know

Tina looks down at her wine for a moment before responding.

(Tina) I don’t actually. At least not yet

She raises her eyes and they look at each other.

(Tina) These last few days have been a bit much to be honest. I’m still getting my head around us no longer being together. And I know that whatever caused that, caused the way that you spoke to me when I first called you at work, is going to be awful

Bette looks at her and Tina shrugs.

(Tina) I just don’t want to hear it

Bette reaches out for her hand and Tina takes it.

(Tina) But I’ll let you know if I change my mind

They finish their drinks and Bette drives them back to Alice’s apartment. They pull up out the front of the building and Bette turns to her.

(Bette) I’d walk you to the door but I don’t want to risk another run in with your roommate

Tina smiles and then looks towards the apartment building.

(Tina) Are they all giving you a hard time?

(Bette smiles) A bit. It’s fine though, they’re looking out for you. Making sure I know where the line is

    Tina turns back to her.

(Tina) And do you? Know where it is?

    (Bette nods) I do

    Tina smiles at her.

    (Tina) That’s a shame

Bette laughs and they hold each other’s gaze.

(Bette) You’re determined to make this difficult for me, aren’t you?

    (Tina smiles) That’s the plan

They smile at each other and Tina then glances back to Alice’s apartment block and sighs.

(Tina) It’s very strange for me. That there’s any interest from anyone else in us having dinner together

    They look at each other.

(Bette) Bit of a weird situation

(Tina smiles) Bit of an understatement

They smile at each other again before Tina leans in and kisses her on the cheek, holding the position a little longer than is necessary. She draws back and looks at her.

    (Tina) Goodnight baby

Bette swallows and smiles at her.

    (Bette) Goodnight

Tina smiles at her as she steps out of the car and closes the door. Bette watches as she walks up the steps and to the front door of Alice’s apartment, and they both look to the other as Tina steps inside and closes the door.

    1. Humm.. so Bette and Tina have been separated for more than 10 years… that is a long time. This temporary amnesia may be the only way these two can get together. They have to be in a place where the pain and hurt has been totally blanked out. Subconsciously, Tina knows what cause the breakup and that is why she does not want to know about it from Bette. Once she brings it into her consciousness, she will have to deal with it. It would seem that her desire to be with Bette is far more important than knowing what happened and then to deal with how she feels about it. Seems like these two are really in a mess.

      Thanks for the chapter…

    2. I agree with you Martha.

It will be interesting to see how this will go, it could be a good thing to come close again, build a friendship before Tina become the Tina she was. I believe their separation was ugly, otherwise their wouldn’t be still so much angry between them. Bette has admitted she is still hung up on Tina and i believe Tina is as well. But ten years separated and so much anger, i really want to know what happened, if you follow canon a bit i wouldn’t be surprised if the reason is that Tina left Bette for Henry or some other guy.
I am really curious what happened.

      Great story!
