Chapter 5 – A Day with No Plans
Bette: Yes, that Alice. I think that this would be a good subject to write a couple of articles on. Of course, she would need to hide her source of information. But I think that the general public knows so little about menopause, that some information would be beneficial. I know if I had more information, it would have made me a little less anxious about it. This would not be a scientific or case study but a human-interest story.
Tina: That’s true. If written properly, it might enhance her career. But our names and anything similar or identifiable as being us has to stay out of it. I do not want another Jenny Schecter with a Bev and Nina story.
Bette: Oh no….no more Bev and Nina.
Tina: Let me think about this for a while before we talk to Alice. If Alice just didn’t have a history of telling the world her friends’ secrets, then I would be all for it. But she did make it through a whole week without telling anything out of school on anyone. And she took the kidding rather well too. This might be a really good test for her. I just hope our names aren’t associated with it.
Bette: Well, if it comes out that way, we can call Mother and see if she has any contacts who can put some duct tape on her mouth which will stay for life.
Tina: I’m sure that Lynn will not be pleased with that. Better think of something else.
Bette: I would hope that nothing would be needed and that she would behave. Your right, we need to think about this.
Tina: It’s really a good idea. It’s a matter of if Alice is the right journalist. Okay, enough of that for the moment, let’s talk about what I am to accomplish while in New York.
Bette: Okay, first you and Angie need to sort through Angie’s clothes and things. Determine what is going to New Haven, what is coming to Los Angeles and what is to be disposed of. Make sure that everything that is going to New Haven fits and is season appropriate. You will have the two clothing racks to start hanging that which goes to New Haven. Please have her dispose of anything that she hasn’t worn in say two years and everything that does not fit. Encourage her to give her stuff animals and childhood toys to charity. And all of her keepsakes must be packed in boxes for shipment. And more than likely they will stay in those boxes until she has a home of her own.
