Chapter 5 – A Day with No Plans

Tina:  Got it. Now, we will then form a shopping list of things she needs. Things for the fall and winter. We will deal with spring and summer clothes at Christmas time while she is home. Okay, what about things for her room?

Bette:  She will need a high-quality dorm refrigerator and a small micro-wave. It would be nice to have a hotplate but the school may not allow them. But look for one of those convection hot plates that requires copper bottom pots and pans. Those things are cool to the touch but heat by some kind of magic. Then get a small frying pan, and couple of pots to heat soups or make pasta in the copper bottom. Get her a copper tea pot. And if she starts to drink coffee, she will need a coffee maker. Get her a couple of plates, a couple of bowls, 2 or 3 sets of flatware, some cooking utensils like a spatula, a good cutting board which is small in size, a large spoon, hand held can opener, and a couple of good knives, and a couple of mugs and plastic tumblers. Get a couple of kitchen towels and some dish washing detergent to hand wash her dishes. She can store this stuff in her trunk at the end of her bed. We will go grocery shopping on the Saturday we are in New Haven. We will get her a regular stash and an emergency stash. If we determine she has room, we need to get her a simple toaster. That way she can have, toast, bagels, and English muffins or something before her early morning classes.  I have a feeling that on the days of her early classes, she will never make it to breakfast.

Tina:  Of course, that depends on what kind of social life she decides she wants. Okay, she going to need a laundry bag and a laundry basket, some laundry detergent, dryer sheets or fabric softener, what about an iron and an ironing board?

Bette:  Yes, finding one that will be suitable is going to be a neat trick. And if it’s a steam iron, she will need distilled water. If you don’t get those in New York, make a list of what we need to shop for in New Haven. Try to get the big stuff out of the way. Remember, we are going to hire a moving crew. Things we can get at a grocery store, we will get in New Haven.
