Chapter 5 – A Day with No Plans
Sincerely,
George M. Shultz, Ph.D.
Dean of The School of Fine Arts
University of California Los Angeles
Tina: Oh Bette, that’s wonderful. I told you they wanted you. I like that they called it your new professional home. Cool!
Angie: What’s going on?
Tina: UCLA wants to hire your Mama!
Angie: Really? That’s a really big school. So, my mom is going to be a Professor at the University of California Los Angeles?
Bette: They are interested in me. I do not have the job yet. We still have a few more steps to take before that happens. They are jumping through a lot of hoops to make this happen though.
Angie: Here is your breakfast. Is there anything else I can get for you?
Bette: You’ll go ahead. I need to respond to this email and I’ll be right with you.

George M. Shultz, Ph.D.
Dean of The School of Fine Arts
University of California Los Angeles
Dear Dean Shultz,
Thank you so much for communication and all your efforts. I would be delighted to meet with you on Monday morning at 10:00 am on July 30, 2019.
I will be bringing my son Daniel to the meeting. My wife and daughter will be in New York for the week and I am the responsible for him without the normal assistance from my family. Daniel is 10 years old and will entertain himself while we meet. I would be delighted to join you for lunch provided Daniel can be included. I would be glad to compensate the school for our meals as I would have to provide us lunch under any circumstances.
I look forward to meeting you Dean Shultz and I hope that we can find mutual agreement whereby I can assist the school and the students meet their educational goals and needs. Art has been my professional world since college and I want to pass on some of that knowledge and experiences to the generation coming up. Thank you for this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Bette Kennard Porter
Bette: Tina could you read this and see if it’s okay?
Tina: Oh, I think it’s fine. You certainly do put your family right up front. It should not come as any surprise that you want to limit your work responsibilities in order to be with your family.
