    Later, they sit at Tina’s island bench, surrounded by pastries and other sweet treats, and sipping their mugs of freshly brewed coffee. Various newspapers are scattered about them as they both drift between sitting together silently with serious focus on an article, and animated debate or voicing their passionate disdain for some recent political development. More often than not they agree with one another on a given issue, but they speak so passionately it could almost be mistaken for an argument.

    In a moment of silent reading Bette looks over at Tina.

    (Bette) Sunday mornings were always my favourite with you.

    (Tina smiles) Me too.

    They continue looking at one another affectionately for a moment.

    (Bette) It does have a different spin on it though, now that you run the paper, and I’m in the paper.

    Bette holds up a picture of herself and they both smile.

    (Tina) You look good.

    (Bette) Thank you. I’m sleeping with the editor.

    Tina smiles, and they read on.

    (Tina) Don’t tell me if you find any mistakes

    (Bette) Oh I won’t. I don’t want to be responsible for some poor copy editor losing their job

    Tina smiles and raises an eyebrow at her, and Bette grins back at her.

    (Bette) Share the last danish with me?

    (Tina nods) Sure

    Bette halves the pastry and places one on each of the side plates Tina places in front of her.

    (Bette) Oh and I still have your key, remind me to give it to you before I go

    Tina has a sip of coffee and looks at her over the mug.

    (Tina) Keep it

    Bette stops and looks at her.

    (Tina smiles) It might come in handy

    (Bette) Well can I also give you mine?

    (Tina smiles) Sure, that might come in handy too.

    Tina returns to her paper and Bette sits for a moment watching her eating her danish, with an adorable smudge of icing sugar on the corner of her mouth.

    Tina notices her look and frowns.

    (Tina) What?

    (Bette smiles) You’ve got something

    Bette leans forward and removes the smudge before standing and placing a gentle kiss on the corner of her mouth. She remains standing and picks up both of their coffee mugs to refill them, walking behind Tina and over to the kitchen counter. Tina casually responds while returning to her paper.

    (Tina) Thanks baby

    Bette can’t help smiling to herself while she refills their mugs from the French press. She’s not sure if Tina even realised what she said, but Bette knows the significance of her saying it for the first time in over a decade.

    5. I am in hopes that there will come a point when they do not have to hide. They can respond to each other naturally regardless of where they are. I want them to go to social events as a couple, to introduce themselves as a couple and to begin to shape a life together… its what they both want. That is indicated by the exchange of keys. Your not out shopping when your current lover could drop in at anytime without notice…. This is a huge step in that the no strings arrangement, now has a very big connection. So these two are into a new set of rules and expectations.

      I love how Bette and Tina always ask before they proceed. Tina granted Bette every night, any night access to her. These two are a couple, an exclusive couple… just not public.

      Excellent story… thank you. Keep writing when you can.
