    Chapter 8

    (Bette) OK, great

Bette has a sip of water and Alice looks at her for another moment.

(Alice) I like her. A lot actually. I think she’s great, and I think you two are fantastic together. I just don’t really understand what either of you are doing

(Shane) That’s having nothing to say is it Al?

    Alice turns to Shane.

(Alice) Come on, this can’t just be me

She gestures with her head towards Bette.

(Alice) Is this not the least casual thing you’ve ever fucking seen?

Shane smiles and has a sip of her beer. Alice continues looking at her with raised eyebrows and Shane shrugs.

(Shane) Pay attention Al, I’m demonstrating what having nothing to say actually fucking looks like

Alice sighs and rolls her eyes, waving a hand dismissively. She turns back to Bette.

    (Alice) So what’s her story?

(Bette frowns) What do you mean?

(Alice) Well she’s obviously as obsessed with you as you are with her

Bette goes to say something and Alice holds up her index finger and cuts her off.

(Alice) Don’t even try to fucking deny it

Bette sighs and Alice looks at her and shrugs.

(Alice) What’s with the boundaries? Do you know?

Bette looks back at her with her lips firmly pressed together, wanting no further part in the conversation. Dana looks past her to Tina and Helena standing at the bar.

(Dana) Well, if you were a fly on the wall in that conversation you’d probably figure it out

They all look to her and Dana nods towards the bar.

(Dana) If anyone understands the inner workings of Tina, it’s Helena, right?

Alice continues looking towards the bar and sees Tina gesture towards the bathrooms and make her way there. She puts her drink down and smiles.

(Alice) I’m going to see if Helena needs a hand carrying the drinks

Bette sighs and shakes her head as she watches Alice leave. She looks to Dana with eyebrows raised.

    (Bette) Thanks Dane

Dana cringes and looks between Bette and Shane.

    (Dana) Sorry

Alice approaches the bar and positions herself alongside Helena.

(Alice) Hey, I’ll help you carry these back

Helena looks at her and smiles.

    (Helena) Thanks Alice

They stand in silence for a moment, and Alice looks at her out of the corner of her eye.

    1. Also very intrigued re: Helena’s response, “She’s not emotionally unavailable, by the way. So far from it actually. That’s the wrong description of her”. Hmm!

    2. This story is very intriguing… I’m just not sure about these two. It is obvious to everyone that these two are very much into each other… their behavior is very much into each other… but they keep going with this façade that this is just enjoying each other in the moment with no attachments and no commitments and no promises of any future. I do not know how much longer this can continue. Whether they admit it or not, they are truly connected and a sudden unavailability of one or the other would be devastating to both of them. So why not face the truth and admit this each other? This is a game at this point… time to chunk the rules of engagement and just be the people they are.

    3. It’s obvious they are both playing a game to protect their feelings for each other. Something’s coming up that will make them both admit how they truly feel. I really like this story a lot.
