Chapter 8
When Michael moved to Los Angeles to become Bette’s assistant at the CAC she brought him into the family circle. Since Peggy was gone on sabbatical he thought that he would get out of being assigned any duties since he was her replacement at these gatherings. Being the matriarch of the family she was the only one given a reprieve from active duty so her only job was to lounge by the pool and sip on exotic drinks that she prepared herself.
Michael tried the lounging around but had a rude awakening when James and Angus picked him up and tossed him into the pool. From that day forward he joined Marina and James in helping with clean-ups. If anyone brought a friend or a date the guest would chip in wherever needed. They were a close knit family and everyone did their part to keep the tradition going.
Bette and Tina started hosting the family gatherings soon after they got together and no matter their schedules the core family made every effort to be there. It was a time for sharing, bonding, and just appreciating everyone and everything in their lives. Even when Bette and Tina’s relationship was on the rocks they continued with the weekly brunches and family dinners. Tina knew that even with Bette away the family was still getting together for brunch at the Planet and Kit would be hosting the dinner at Bette’s house.
For a fleeting moment Tina wondered if she would ever be a part of that again. Kit’s words about parading her lovers in front of Bette echoed in her head. Since they were single Shane, James, and Michael were encouraged to bring dates to the family gatherings but she wondered if she and Henry would ever be accepted and welcomed in that way.
She tried not to dwell on it. Besides it was too soon to even think about introducing Henry into her social circle. Her friends would never understand how she could be embarking on a new relationship less than three weeks after breaking up a seven year marriage. She hadn’t even given herself time to grieve the loss and here she was preparing Sunday dinner for her new boyfriend while he sat in front of the TV watching sports. What a paradigm shift her life had taken since she proclaimed to her lesbian life partner that she had renewed feelings for men.

Wow, thank you, two chapters in less than 24 hours; well Bat, Tina doesn’t get her answers, but at least she is comparing. I think that perhaps her problem is not about sex with men or women, but with Bette, and not exactly sex; she said doesn’t want to hurt her ex-partner but she really does it; Tina is caged in Bette’s circle; she needs her ‘own’ friends, out of it; no even other lesbians, (probably the lesbian world at WE-HO is small and interconnected). I believe Tina possibly feel her guilt, and suffocation, and probably alone, (I’m just thinking). I like a lot this chapter and at the same time it is very painful (believe me, I’m not masochist); but I am discovering and understanding more about the dysfunctional issue between them. Thanks and pps
proteonomics. I will be posting extra chapters this weekend, because I have the time and the chapters are ready, but also because I will be traveling for business four days next week and won’t have access to my computer to make any regular posts. You can read them all at once or save them to read next week.
Yes, Tina’s issue has little to do with sex as she is coming to realize, but I wanted to give her a compassionate man to do her exploration with rather than someone like Josh. That’s why I made Henry a friend and confidant in this story prior to them becoming sexually involved. She really is taking the wrong approach but I don’t think she knows what to do, and Bette basically kicking her out of the house and telling her to figure things out on her own didn’t help matters. .
Hey Bat, to have you post another chapter so soon is really great, even if I don’t like the context of this chapter, which I should assure you has nothing to do with your writing talent. Tina really seems more than confused to me and should consider talking to some professional. Whatever Tina is looking for I don’t think that she will be able to find those answers by trying to force a relationship with Henry – she doesn’t to me seems ready to date him – and he is setting himself up to some major heartache. Please don’t take my next comment the wrong way – but when Tina wanted him to have sex with her he declined and stated that he wanted to date her, but right at the next day they ended up having sex together?! As for their ‘family’ it’s going to be hard for them to not take sides, it sure is going to get awkward should Tina decide to join their family activities with her ‘boyfriend’ so soon after ending her marriage with Bette – so she either has to attend without Henry or she is going to stay away, either way this means she is going to distance herself from her longtime friends and that’s definitely not healthy. How come Tina didn’t have any friends of her own when meeting Bette? She had been in L.A. for some time working in the movie business, there must have been people she considered friends. Sorry but it’s something I always wondered about while watching the show. But enough – waiting patiently for your next post.
as1219 – I will be posting several chapters this weekend, to make up for not being able to post next week due to my travel schedule so you can read them all or save some for next week.
I agree it was unusual that Tina didn’t have friends of her own, which is part of the reason why I made Henry a friend before they became lovers. Secondly yes it did seem odd that he declined the sex the night before then slept with her the next evening but they did ‘technically go on a date’. However, that wasn’t the point. There were a couple of reasons why he held off. First he did not want to have sex with her while she was drunk. Secondly knowing her agenda he didn’t want to be used for sex just to satisfy her need to explore her ‘feelings for men.’. When he said he wanted to date her, it didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to have sex with her; it meant he wanted it to mean something and by asking her to date he could at least feel like she had feelings for him. I will address this night in a later chapter because I felt they did need to talk about it after they both had a chance to process it.
