Chapter 9
(Bette) I see
(Tina) How did it never come up that you live in LA? I never would have started anything with you had I known
(Bette) I guess we were too busy with other things to discuss it
Tina sighs and narrows her eyes.
(Bette shrugs) I don’t know, it just didn’t come up I guess. I expect it would have if you had, I don’t know, mentioned that you live here?
(Tina) You were also so vague about your career. I didn’t at all get the idea that you own a gallery! I knew you were passionate, but I think you said you dabble in the arts.
(Bette) Sorry as I recall it was you who wanted to limit any talk of home. I can see why now
They share a look.
(Bette) And anyway not wanting to talk about work while on holiday and lying about the city you live in and your sexuality are kind of different, I feel
(Tina) Well, regardless, I also wouldn’t have started anything with you had I known you were so high profile. It would have been too great a risk that we would cross paths in the real world
(Bette) So it seems
They stand in silence together for a while.
(Bette) Do you work in film production?
Tina looks at her.
(Tina) I’m an academic. I’m an Associate Professor at UCLA
(Bette) In film studies?
Tina cringes apologetically.
(Tina) Law
Bette sighs and shakes her head at her with a faint smile.
They stand in silence again for a while, both gathering their thoughts.
(Bette) Well you obviously sought it out. Holidaying in Majorca and spending your time at lesbian venues
(Tina) I did, yes
Bette studies her for a moment.
(Bette) And it’s not for you
They share another look.
(Bette) OK, I’m not going to create drama for you. Your secret lesbian dalliance is safe with me
(Tina) Thank you
(Bette) Though your boyfriend has recently become a significant investor in my gallery. It’s fair to say we’ll cross paths again.
(Tina) Fiance
Bette stops and looks at her.
(Bette) Right. Shall we just forget the whole thing then?
Tina looks at her for a moment and bites her lip. Bette looks back at her, again feeling the same intensity between them as earlier when they first locked eyes.
Tina breaks the moment and focuses downwards on her wine glass.
(Tina) Yes, I think that’s best
Tina raises her eyes and they look at one another.
(Bette) OK. I need to get back
(Tina) OK
Later, Bette and Alice stand amongst a group of people chatting happily as they enjoy the exhibit, and the wine. Alice glances over at Bette, standing alongside her, and speaks in a hushed tone.
(Alice) So, who’s the gorgeous blonde you snuck off to your office with earlier?
Bette has a sip of her wine and answers without looking at her.
(Bette) No one
(Alice) Really? Because it didn’t look like…
(Bette) Just leave it Al
Bette gives her a stern look and turns and walks away.
Late in the evening, Alice approaches Tina as she is standing on her own admiring a painting. She stands alongside her and also looks up at the painting.
(Alice) It’s extraordinary, isn’t it?
Tina looks over at her and smiles.
(Tina) It certainly is
They stand together in silence for a moment, both continuing to take in the piece.
(Alice) So, what brings you here tonight?
Tina looks over at her.
(Tina) My partner is an investor in the gallery
Alice considers this for a moment.
(Alice) Andrew Rhys-Baker?
Tina nods.
(Alice) Well, you’ll have to excuse me, I didn’t know I was talking to political royalty
Tina smiles at her as Alice extends her hand.
(Alice) Alice Pieszecki
(Tina smiles) Tina Kennard
Alice keeps a hold of her hand while looking at her in shock. She breaks into a smile as she speaks.
(Alice) Tina… Kennard…
Alice gives a small laugh and Tina frowns at her, confused.
They are interrupted as Tina spots Andrew beckoning to her across the room, motioning towards the door as he makes his way there while talking on his cell. They share a look and she smiles and holds up her index finger.
Tina turns to Alice with an apologetic smile.
(Tina) Sorry, it looks like we’re leaving. It was nice to meet you, perhaps we’ll run into each other again
Alice smiles broadly at her.
(Alice) I certainly hope so
Tina gives her an uncertain smile as she moves away.

I love this story sooo much!!!
Bravo!!
WTF, Tina. I am so heartbroken. Bette deserved better. I’m a huge fan of Tina, but this chapter kicked me in the stomach.
I WASNT xpecting all the lying from Tina. And now it makes me wonder what Helena might be it to.
Tina & Andrew having to book all a sudden will be a chall for Tina. Her hetero-planned life may not be as gleeful as she thinks.
Andrew gonna be real busy as a prospective Govenor. Lots of beautiful ladies in his path . . . .
Well, I knew that for Tina, there was someone back home… but I did not realize that back home was LA nor did I ever suspect that someone would be man. And I am like Bette – a woman traveling alone to a well known lesbian destination would more than likely not be a heterosexual. But after a verbal confirmation that she was gay? Well, I would have had a huge kick in the gut too if I were Bette. And now as they say in the good ole days: The plot thickens. The attraction is still very much there and Bette’s new buisness partner is engaged to the woman whom you are truly smitten with… Tina Kinnard….. All are public figures and one is a political figure on his way to the Governor’s office. And so the likelihood of Bette and Tina being just casual acquaintances is not very high. And now that Alice knows… Helena will soon know…. Shane will know… and the moral of the story: There is no such thing as a secret.
Wow, Tina lied about everything? Damn, what a gut punch! Let’s see how long that works for her. I believe that their chemistry will overcome this little heteroblend comfort zone. PPS
Hmmm… Some details about their time in Majorca makes sense now. Tina not taking any photos, how she was captivated by their visit to a museum on law and politics, that phone call she made in private before they had dinner in a place where another woman hit on Bette and the strange fact that they didn’t even exchange details, not even surnames. Maybe Tina went on that holiday to get all that gay feelings out of her system before she gets married. But then she met Bette. She lied about some stuff but I think she’s in complete denial of her true feelings for Bette. Poor Bette though. The dream vacation, holiday romance she had has turned into a fantasy she must now try to forget.
I have a few questions, katynd: Will Bette fight for her feelings for Tina and confront her on her true feelings for her too? Their holiday romance was all on Tina’s terms; Bette just went along with it. Will Bette just let this go without a fight? And what’s the significance of Helena in this story? Does she know that Tina’s in the closet or was she surprised by the mention of Bette’s name? Hmmm… Very intriguing and well-written as always, katynd! Many thanks again for writing and sharing this lovely story! I can’t wait to read the next chapter! :D
I hope you are getting some answers to these as the story goes on Mightymouse :)
Thanks for reading and for your supportive comments! katynd
