Chapter XXXIV – Empire State of Mind – Counterblast

He stepped away from her, holding his hands up, as the boat sped over the water.  He saw that she’d locked the controls with the button combination that he’d used when he’d motioned to her that they head towards the front deck.

    “To kill me?” she asked.

“No … but what do you want to do now? Kill me, instead?” he asked as he stepped further away.

“There’s nowhere to run, you know,” he pointed out.  “My team will find you, and even if they can’t, you won’t be able to dock anywhere in the islands.  This boat is registered to me, and if I go missing and you show up in this boat, you’ll be charged with murder.”

Miller shook her head.  This time it was her turn to laugh mirthlessly, “I’m not running.  I’m tired of running.”

“Alright,” he said as he angled further away from her, “well, from here it sounds like you’ve acted rashly without a plan.  Is heading towards the storm your plan?  That sounds suicidal.  Let me help you come up with a better plan….”

“Who says I don’t have a good plan?” Miller asked.  “You have to be stopped, Mr. Green, and I plan to stop you.  To me that’s a very good plan.  You are done with collecting people.  Or disposing of any more people, either.”

He suddenly ducked out of sight behind the built-in sofa, and seconds later emerged with a gun.

“Seems like your plan has run into a snag, Ms. Miller,” he laughed cruelly, indicating with the gun for her to step away from the control panel.

She stepped away only slightly from the panel.  He circled closer to the control panel.  “Throw your knife to the side,” he ordered her.

She was now standing behind the captain’s chair.  “As you wish,” she said, and flung the knife in his direction, aiming for his chest.  He fired a couple of shots at her when he realized what she’d done.

He went down with a gurgling sound and fell to the floor.  Miller had tried to duck behind the captain’s chair, but knew from the sharp pain in her stomach area that one of the bullets had struck her.  When he’d emerged with the gun, she saw that it was one of those powerful handguns that had just entered the market.  So the bullet must have easily cut through the steel-backed chair and hit me in the stomach, she thought with a grimace.

      ALL STARS.

    5. Have really enjoyed writing this story and have truly appreciated your thoughts, comments, PMs, ever since “Let It Happen” in the other site, through “Love Soul Heaven Hell,” and “Empire State of Mind.” You’ve played a bigger role in shaping the whole story than you may have realized and have been patient through all the ups and downs and twists and turns. (does anyone remember the near universal consternation concerning Tina cheating in the first book? And the anxiety about having them exposed to mortal danger in a war-zone in the second book? But then I think you all loved the resolution to the problems they had in the first book via Aristophanes. And enjoyed the party scenes in the second and third books.) I know it was a gamble to take the story in the unexpected direction it took in the third book — but I sensed that, as readers, you were looking for more. Any readership that thought I used Plato at just the right moment of a story like this would appreciate a bold story about the last thing one would expect to find here, right? Gold, of all things. So thanks, again, for the challenge, patience, and appreciation.

All props to Jacky and everyone behind the scenes. You ladies, without a doubt, are gold.

    6. Thanks for the journey. Absolutely loved it. I hope there’s more to come, like maybe “Empire of Gold.” I can see infinite possibilities. Please continue to share your talent–it’s off the charts.
