    Dear Diary—Chapter 1

”Vera! I don’t care!…Out of the question!..My client wants full custody!… That is not up for discussion!….You tell your client no deal!….. We will see you in court on the 17th” The woman finished slamming her cellphone down, propped her elbows on the counter resting her head in her hands.

Bette looked over at the woman as she wiped a glass knowing she didn’t just walk in and sit at the bar not to drink.

”What can I get ya?” Bette asked as she placed herself in front of the woman and leaned forward against the counter

”Bourbon on the rocks please” The woman replied not looking up from her current position.

”Coming right up” Bette replied grabbing a glass and fixing the drink.

Bette put a napkin down in front of the woman on the counter and set her drink on top.

”There you go. Do you want me to start a tab?” Bette asked as the woman shook her head and finally looked up to lock eyes.

”Uhmm? No..Thanks” The woman replied taking her eyes quickly off of Bette, grabbed her drink taking a big gulp from it, and set it down.

    ”Bad day?” Bette asked softly.

”You could say that” The woman replied glancing at Bette then back at her drink. ”Days like these make me thankful I never married. Hell! I don’t even have a significant other. I have no time for one when I’m too busy trying to help the ones who split from theirs” The woman replied taking a sip of her drink.

”So you’re a lawyer?” Bette concluded

”What gave it away?” The woman replied sarcastically at first then smiled.

    Bette chuckled

”I just recently split from my partner of ten years. I just moved back here from New York” Bette replied as she fixed a drink for another customer and served it to them.

The woman raised her brow in interest at the word split.

    ”Domestic partnership?” The woman asked

”What gave it away?” Bette asked mockingly

It was the woman’s turn to chuckle

”Well you didn’t say spouse or husband so I just kind of deduced from there..But do you have a lawyer?” The woman asked twirling her drink around between her hands.
