    How Do You Like It?

At first, Bette thought the most obvious reason had to have been her presumptuousness in purchasing this building, in the first place, and her audacity in setting up a café that would be in direct competition with Patty’s Diner, the local fave, located further down main street from Alchemy, closer to the center of town. Patty’s Diner has been here for decades, they probably thought.  And it would be here long after that expensive café shuts down.

Unfortunately for Patty’s Diner, as it soon became clear to all, the advantage Alchemy had over Patty’s Diner was location, location, location. This was the reason Bette wanted this building, chose to settle in this town, over other buildings, other towns – “Alchemy,” her new café, sat right at the T-intersection of the state road and Main Street.   Every car, bus, or truck taking that state road would see “Alchemy” looming in front of them, sitting like an oasis beckoning the thirsty or tired driver, miles before they finally got to town. They would inevitably arrive at the “Alchemy,” not at the diner nor at the pizza place off of the main street, or any other local haunt, once they got to that T-intersection. Besides that …

The other obvious reason was, well, looks. Bette’s steel-clad, exposed-brick, triple-glazed tinted glass Alchemy café had a ton of it, with lots to spare. Looks were a reflection of substance – one got more than just a good cup of coffee here that was served in good-looking interiors. Bette had added a back porch, on which you could recline on the comfy Adirondack chairs that Bette had refinished herself, whereas Patty’s Diner backed into the local tow-truck/car mechanic’s grease-filled, disorganized garage. Good looks were only the start: “Alchemy” offered you so many options. You could chill inside and tap into the free, hi-speed internet on offer while you sipped your coffee or munched on a hot, toasty Panini. Forgot your device? No problem — borrow a tablet from the prettiest café owner you’d ever have the pleasure to meet, to catch up on the news, or tab through millions of e-books available, or head to the café’s media room to watch sports, TV, Netflix or Hulu.   Or you could completely unplug, and wander out to the café’s back porch, snag one of those comfy Adirondack chairs, put your feet up, reflect on the meadow, the pond, and rolling hills that came with the property, or gaze at all that purple mountain majesty in the far horizon. As you sipped coffee the likes of which you’d never have expected to find out here, in the middle of nowhere, you could congratulate yourself on that good decision you made to take your coffee break in this unexpected oasis.

    1. Finally Tina is coming to town and will be fierce competition to Lena for the attention of Bette.

But knowing you skydancer and that i believe you wrote in the first chapter that your Tina is or was married to Henry, it will take awhile before they will become a couple.

Skydancer, i really love your style, how you tell your story.

      Thanks for the update!

      • Hi @Bibi,
Thanks!!! I wanted to say I do appreciate your remarks and your good taste ???? (he-he) in giving your thumbs-up to my style.
You’re right, I do like to have the characters move the story along, and to have them find their own reasons to get involved with someone. Yes, it does take time, but the characters can’t be rushed, as you know. I hope you’ll continue to enjoy this one as they take us along in their journey.

        Happy Holidays!

    2. I’m doing what I can to make it smooth even as I try to understand the issues that are really getting to me as I write, since filtering out the real WTFs — an expanding, worrisome list — is becoming nearly impossible. If it gets a bit much in this book, holler please. Am glad you all are liking things, so far.

Btw— i’m having a hard time writing Lena out, since she’s based on an actual, compelling, woman, so Bette is going to have to struggle, too. Only fair, I think.

    3. Am enjoying your “Runner” series tremendously….even though I was becoming
a bit lost in the opening scenario of investment jargon. I love the way you
have come up with yet another incarnation for Bette and how she meets Tina.
Please post this soon! Can’t wait to see how this triad (Bette-Lena-Tina) plays
out! Thanks for sharing your stories.

    4. Can hardly wait for them to meet, will sparks fly immediately, I certainly hope so. Lena is being intrusive and taking liberties and advantage of the situation . Don’t much care for people like that. Hopefully our Tina will be just about the hottest thing Bette has seen in a long time and vice-versa. Hope Tina and her crew will be spending a lot of time in that hamlet and just push Lena right out of the picture. She will find that she is not the “be all to end all” for Bette. But hopefully Tina will wear that crown real soon. Great update. Thanks for posting.

    5. Can I just be lazy and say ‘Ditto’ to all the above comments, please!!!

Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year and hope you will celebrate 2018 by posting us a new update.

Thanks for your posts, love your stories and the way you write. Looking forward to my favourite couple being together again in your post.
