How Do You Like It?
Yeah, that could be it. That could be why most of the town shunned her. Alchemy. It was too much. People were used to Patty’s Diner. That’s what they liked; all they needed.
Or, if she was being honest, she’d point a finger directly to the spot where it hurt most: all that animosity could simply be about who she was, or what she represented. Let’s count the ways.
How about just one example? Remember the time when the reconstruction project was in its final stages, and that hunter walked right up to you, chewing tobacco, shotgun slung on an arm, pistol strapped to the other hip, and he’d asked the obvious question, “You’re not from around here are you? “
“Um … no, not originally. But I’ve moved here, as you can see.”
He’d spat on the ground. “You should ‘ve set up all the way over there, on the other side of town. This area here is prime land. For, you know, the right people. White people. People like the family that used to own all the land in this area. They also had more than a thousand acres in southeastern Montana. Too bad they lost all of it. But, someone like them shoulda bought this building right here.”
Clenched jaw, stony stare back. “Hmm… is that right?”
“That’s right. You couldn’t have known it, but someone had to tell you. That damn agent was too keen to sell, and apparently to just anyone, too. That’s how you managed to buy this thing.”
Bette had been tiring even then of all the racist shit she’d been putting up with since day one. “Are you a policeman? Or a sheriff or the law or something? Someone who can repeal federal law? Decide who should be able to buy what around here?”
The hunter slowly raised his shotgun up to his shoulder, and spat again on the floor. “You have no fear do you?”
In her head, Bette asked, “Fear of what?”
She stared back at him silently instead.
“Well, it’s a small town. Strangers don’t settle in here everyday. Hard to find anyone without roots in this state who’d want to. No matter. Everyone learns how this town works, sooner or later.” The man finally left after that, but not before spitting one more time on the ground, and waving to a group of workers, apparently friends of his, who were finishing the new deck out back.

Finally Tina is coming to town and will be fierce competition to Lena for the attention of Bette.
But knowing you skydancer and that i believe you wrote in the first chapter that your Tina is or was married to Henry, it will take awhile before they will become a couple.
Skydancer, i really love your style, how you tell your story.
Thanks for the update!
Hi @Bibi,
Thanks!!! I wanted to say I do appreciate your remarks and your good taste ???? (he-he) in giving your thumbs-up to my style.
You’re right, I do like to have the characters move the story along, and to have them find their own reasons to get involved with someone. Yes, it does take time, but the characters can’t be rushed, as you know. I hope you’ll continue to enjoy this one as they take us along in their journey.
Happy Holidays!

Love your polished writing style. You really draw me into what Bette is thinking and feeling. You made the tension between Bette/Jay and Lena quite palpable. Very well done.
As always, great job! Thanks
I’m doing what I can to make it smooth even as I try to understand the issues that are really getting to me as I write, since filtering out the real WTFs — an expanding, worrisome list — is becoming nearly impossible. If it gets a bit much in this book, holler please. Am glad you all are liking things, so far.
Btw— i’m having a hard time writing Lena out, since she’s based on an actual, compelling, woman, so Bette is going to have to struggle, too. Only fair, I think.
Am enjoying your “Runner” series tremendously….even though I was becoming
a bit lost in the opening scenario of investment jargon. I love the way you
have come up with yet another incarnation for Bette and how she meets Tina.
Please post this soon! Can’t wait to see how this triad (Bette-Lena-Tina) plays
out! Thanks for sharing your stories.
Can hardly wait for them to meet, will sparks fly immediately, I certainly hope so. Lena is being intrusive and taking liberties and advantage of the situation . Don’t much care for people like that. Hopefully our Tina will be just about the hottest thing Bette has seen in a long time and vice-versa. Hope Tina and her crew will be spending a lot of time in that hamlet and just push Lena right out of the picture. She will find that she is not the “be all to end all” for Bette. But hopefully Tina will wear that crown real soon. Great update. Thanks for posting.
Meant to include Happy Holidays wishes to you and yours. Thanks again.
Can I just be lazy and say ‘Ditto’ to all the above comments, please!!!
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year and hope you will celebrate 2018 by posting us a new update.
Thanks for your posts, love your stories and the way you write. Looking forward to my favourite couple being together again in your post.
