    It’s the last night and then time to go home.

     

    ‘Sure, did you eat?’

     

    ‘Yes, earlier.’

     

    ‘How long have you been up?’

     

    ‘Awhile, did you sleep enough?  You can sleep on the drive back.’

     

    ‘I’m fine.’

     

    ‘I’m going to take one last look around, while you get ready, to make sure I haven’t left anything.’

    The drive back had been very solemn, Tina spent most of the time staring out the window and Bette just drove.  Every once in a while Tina would touch Bette in some way, holding her hand, touching her arm, resting her hand on Bette’s thigh or brushing the back of her hand across Bette’s cheek.  These gestures seemed to Bette to be filled with sadness not the love she usually felt when Tina touched her.  Bette knew she was reading way too much into every word, every gesture trying to steel herself against the inevitable.  She had even decided the tell tale sign would be whether or not Tina took her luggage when she dropped her off to get her car.  She had been staying at the house even when Bette was away, so if she took her bag it had to mean she wasn’t coming back.

     

    ‘Tina?  Do you want to have lunch before I drop you off?’

     

    ‘No, I really just want to get to Kit’s’

     

    ‘All right, well, we’re almost there.’

     

    ‘I’ll call you when I leave Kit’s.’

     

    ‘Take your time.’

     

    ‘Are you going to work?’

     

    ‘No, I’ll be at the house.  I have a few things I need to do.  Here we are.’

     

    ‘Can you open the trunk so I can get my bag?’

     

    ‘I’ll get it for you.’

     

    ‘I can get it, just open the trunk, please?’

     

    ‘Sure.’

     

    ‘I didn’t mean to snap at you.’

     

    ‘It’s all right.’

     

    Tina got out, put her bag in her car, closed Bette’s trunk and walked around to Bette’s door.

     

    ‘Could you get out for a minute?’

     

    Bette stepped out of the car trying desperately not to fall apart.

     

    ‘What is it T?’

     

    Tina put her arms around Bette and held her for a moment then kissed her, ‘I’ll call you later.’

    6. I was holding my breathe the entire story with a pit in my tummy wondering what would happen. Great story, the loving make scene would be a great ending ;)
