    I Need My Best Friend – Part 17

    Bette stood there and watched Tina drive away and then got back in her car and drove home.

    * * * * *

    Bette knew there were certain practical matters that would have to be taken care of; their lives had been intertwined for several years.  She had given a lot of thought to this on the torturously long drive back.  She didn’t want things to be drawn out once the decision was final.  She knew Tina would think she was trying to control things, but she didn’t honestly believe she was strong enough to go through countless conversations about dividing their things.

    She took one more look at the list on her laptop, Sign the house over to Tina, Split the savings and investments (60% to Tina), Split bonus from Provocations, she turned off the laptop and went to take a long, very hot shower.

    As she opened the closet to find something to wear she noticed a box on the shelf.  She retrieved it and sat down on the side of the bed.  When she opened the box all the emotion she had been fighting so hard to control hit her as if someone had opened a floodgate.  This box held all the cards, letters and notes Tina had ever written to her.  It also held other keepsakes that had anything to do with the gifts she had received from Tina, bows, gift cards, but on top of the box were the books she had sent James to buy the day they lost the baby.  She had stored them here after Tina had finally fallen asleep that night.

    ‘You would have made a horrible mother; you couldn’t even manage to be there on time for the appointment.  You sent James for the books, you couldn’t even make the effort to go yourself.’

    She had labeled the box “Work Papers”, now she wondered why she felt the need to hide that these things meant enough to her that she wanted to save them.  Tina had a similar box, she had simply written “Tina” on hers with little hearts and smiley faces.  Bette thought how different things might have turned out if she hadn’t hidden so much of herself from Tina.  She took out a bundle of letters and carefully untied the lace ribbon that held them together and she started to read.
