I Need My Best Friend – Part 6

Tina touched Bette on the shoulder and said, ‘hey, where are you?’

‘I was just wondering the same thing?’

    ‘What do you mean?’

‘That afternoon, making you feel that way, telling you your heart would always be safe with me.  I meant that.  I really meant that.’

    ‘I know you did.’

‘The way I felt with you was the way I’d always wanted to feel, but had never felt comfortable enough with anyone else.  I don’t understand what happened.’

‘Remember what it was like when we started seeing each other?’

Bette smiled, ‘I remember it was a very, very long courtship!’

‘I’m not talking about that!  I’m talking about how protective you were.  You took me to places that you were sure we wouldn’t run in to people either of us knew until I could get comfortable with the idea of being with a woman.  We spent most of our time alone getting to know each other.  You created this little cocoon where I would feel safe and unthreatened.  Knowing my comfort, my feelings were that important to you made me fall in love with you.’

‘As much as I’ve changed the past few years I don’t know why you’ve stayed with me.’

    ‘Love Bette, love.’

Tina took Bette’s hand and said, ‘Now let’s figure out why things changed.’

‘Do you know when I changed?’

‘I’m not sure if it was when you gave up your gallery or when we started getting our finances in order to have a baby.  We started living on your salary and saving mine.  We cut back on the trips we took, on being extravagant.  Maybe you felt trapped.  What do you remember about that time?’

‘I remember thinking this is what being grown up is all about.  I watched my father work at a job he didn’t like so he could take care of his family.’

‘I thought you loved your job.’

‘I loved being involved with the art and the artists but I hate the politics.’

‘Why did you go to the CAC?  Why didn’t you keep your gallery?’

‘If we were going to have a family I needed to make things stable.’

    ‘I could have kept working.’

‘You wanted to be home.  I wanted you to have that.’

    2. Hey..You’re Back!! I have been eagerly waiting for your new chapter and couldn’t help but smile when I saw you posted a new one today! I really love your story and the conversations that Bette&Tina are having are so realistic and beautiful..it will take a while to heal but I hope they will find each other in the end..and asalways, as long as you write ’em..I will faithfully read ’em..I’m already hooked!..do much appreciate you taking the time to share this with us..

    3. Hey, welcome back! Nice to read your stories again. It’s a good approach to explore. I love the conversations they have. It’s still dramatic but it’s not melodramatic. Still moving and the friendship they have shines through though can’t forget the fact that they’re not meant to be just friends. waiting for the next…

    4. This is more realistic to me than the stories that have B&T splitting up. Of all the people I have seen deal with infidelity in their marriage, it is the couples that truly love each other that try to make the relationship work. They go through all possibilities in order not to leave any ‘what ifs’ lurking out there. Of the ones that have taken the aforementioned route, all the marriages have survived. You are doing a fantastic job with this story. Keep up the great work. I like the honesty between these two.

    5. hey! nice to have you here again… Good one… Bette was so sweet with Tina seven years ago… and tina has forgiven bette… really good… what’s gonna be tina’s question? surprise surprise…

    6. This is great. It’s good how they are talking like mature woman and clearing the air instead of holding it in when they don’t know the facts.

    7. Great great great, like Bete said ‘Why couldn’t I have just talked to you instead of cheating on you?’ good question but if you didn’t we never got a chance to read this Story

    8. As Always this was a wonderful chapter. They seem to be moving closer to finding each other again. Please keep writing. I look forward to reading each new chapter.

    9. I’m so happy you didn’t chuck this story! It is so realistic…how I imagine 2 people who love each other find their way back. I am so enjoying this please go on…soon!

    10. Tina jumps to conclusions as quickly as Bette does. They are both so afraid of losing each other. Wonderful writing if u ever read these comments; I just wanted u to know.
