Chapter 31

Bette hadn’t ended up going round to seeing Tina after the library benefit. She had been too tired and too drunk to really be at her best when she saw her lover. So she had gone home and crashed out. But after she had showered and changed she was heading towards Tina’s place. She had the brand new I-phone in a gift bag in her briefcase and was looking forward to seeing the look on Tina’s face.

Tina couldn’t remember the last time she had felt as bad as she was when she had woken up. Her intention had been to go to the gym, come home and have a healthy dinner in front of a movie. She had gone to the gym but she’d ended up drinking too much wine while watching a DVD and had fallen asleep on the sofa. So she was feeling stiff and sore and even though she found it hard to admit – she had truly missed Bette. They were spending more and more evenings together – both at her apartment and at Bette’s house. Even when they didn’t share a bed they would end talking on the phone or via IM until they both started to fall asleep – Tina’s life was becoming bound up with Bette’s . She was sitting on the sofa drinking orange juice and considering going back to bed as she wasn’t working today. Her eyelids were just dropping when someone knocked at the door. Hoping it wasn’t her pain in the ass next door neighbour or even worse her mother she got up and unlocked the door
“Hey sexy “
“Bette ! “
Bette grinned at Tina who was just wearing a long white man’s shirt.
“Hey there “
Tina couldn’t articulate how much her spirits had been lifted – it was so good to see the tall, beautiful brunette. Bette looked really nice in black casual slacks and a long grey overcoat.
“Hello – come in “
Bette stepped inside and smiled at Tina
“How are you ?”
“I am better for seeing you “ Tina replied
“Same here – I have a hangover “
Tina smiled “Me too – you want a coffee ?”
“Yeah – that would be great “
Bette walked through to the sitting room and looked around. Tina suddenly realised how little she was wearing
“Damn – where’s my robe ?”
“You don’t need to on my account “ Bette replied
Tina looked at Bette and raised an eyebrow at her – Bette laughed
“How was your evening ?”
“Okay – how about you ?”
“I drank too much – Peggy can make an evening go with a swing even if she isn’t there”
“How so ?”
“She gave Helena the cash to buy champagne all night “
“Did my mom enjoy herself ?”
“The sight of her dancing with James who epitomises the song title “ dancing queen “ is one that will live long in my memory “
“Oh no – she danced ?”
“She couldn’t be dragged off the dance floor “
