    LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-3

”I came to say hello but Andrew informed me that you were downstairs, so I figured they had kept you without breakfast for the x-ray.” Tina watched Bette enter the room, the brunette signaled to the nurse that she would get into bed by herself without her help and so she left the room closing the door.

Bette looked at Tina for a fraction of a second, it was simply impossible to resist her, but this made her even more in pain. She grabbed the bag that Tina had placed on the bedside table and opened it, looking at the blonde again.

”donuts? full of sugar for my arteries.” Bette said in a sour tone.

”without sugar. whole grains, I’m a doctor remember?” Tina didn’t really notice that Bette had sounded so sour.

Bette tried to formulate something, but closed her mouth, putting the envelope back on the nightstand.

    ”Aren’t you hungry?” Tina asked.

”Not at all, but thank you.”

Tina sighed, her hands in her lab coat, she wasn’t the same Bette as a few nights before, happy with the pudding, but she knew it was normal, when you were locked up in a hospital, days always started out badly.

Tina cleared her throat, noticing that Bette wasn’t looking at her ”can I do something for you?”

Bette laughed sarcastically ”a miracle?” she spat out that rhetorical question without looking at the blonde.

Tina remained silent, Bette on her side looking out the window, her gaze absent. Tina took a small step towards her, her voice small as if she were afraid of breaking something.

    ”Bette, I understand that it’s difficult…”

Tina didn’t finish the sentence, Bette turned around and her eyes had already said it all.

”do you understand? do you really understand Tina? because to understand you have to be in the situations”.

Bette stared at her ”but that’s what we say to our patients to pity them, right?” she finished and Tina raised an eyebrow in shock.

”you know…” Tina couldn’t quite figure out what she was supposed to say ”no one feels sorry for you Bette, I respect you too much to do that and…that’s why if you want to be alone just say so, I came to make you feel better…but my company is not welcome today.”

    Comments

    1. Bette has been in the hospital for 2 years. I would assume that she and Callie broke up before she was admitted as a patient. Callie was seeing Mark before she broke up with Bette, so I would think that pregnancy would be inevitable. Bette’s situation seems hopeless at this point. It appears that her only hope is a transplant. She is unhappy about her physical condition and her future prospects. That does not lend itself to improving her health. And Callie’s announced pregnancy does not make Bette’s life easier. Tina is trying to be her friend, but Bette’s attitude does not make it easy. Life for Bette is spiraling from bad to worse. In Bette’s words, she needs a miracle.
