    LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-3

Bette closed her eyes, she had to calm her breathing at all costs, she wanted to scream, scream terribly, so much that the entire hospital would collapse, but she couldn’t.

This was one of the worst things about her illness, she couldn’t be herself, she always had to be controlled, moderated.

    Fuck.

It’s not that she didn’t expect it, she certainly expected it, a child from those two was as predictable as snow in December, but hearing it said like that, wow it hurt so much, it was all true. And to think that Callie and Bette had talked about children in the three years they had been together, they had planned them, when Callie’s job would be more stable, after specialization, they both wanted children.

Now only Callie would have a child obviously. For Bette the possibilities were excluded.

This hurt her terribly, she missed everything in her life, her patients, her job, her freedom and on top of all this she had also added this denied possibility. Bette swallowed shedding a few tears, she threw the book she was reading on the nightstand, it was almost nine, no one would come to visit her anymore so I thought it was better to end this day.

Unfortunately for her the night and the new day did not bring anything good, on the contrary.

Bette had woken up in a terrible mood, during the round of visits she had been of few words, not talkative as always, Helena had noticed it and a lot, Bette could be melancholic but never shaved towards other people who had not done anything to her.

A nurse had gone to get her in her room to go and have a lung x-ray, staying quite stretched out, even if Bette was good and got up practically often, the fear of some pleural effusion was always around the corner.

Even there she was quite taciturn even with Stacy who she had known for years.

When she was wheeled back to the room Tina was right outside waiting for her, smiling as always, with a bag of coffee in her hand.

Bette smiled so as not to seem rude, in reality she was dying inside and Tina was the last thing she needed.

    Comments

    1. Bette has been in the hospital for 2 years. I would assume that she and Callie broke up before she was admitted as a patient. Callie was seeing Mark before she broke up with Bette, so I would think that pregnancy would be inevitable. Bette’s situation seems hopeless at this point. It appears that her only hope is a transplant. She is unhappy about her physical condition and her future prospects. That does not lend itself to improving her health. And Callie’s announced pregnancy does not make Bette’s life easier. Tina is trying to be her friend, but Bette’s attitude does not make it easy. Life for Bette is spiraling from bad to worse. In Bette’s words, she needs a miracle.
