LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-6
”oh great, you have company anyway…” Tina smiled at Bette ”make sure she finishes eating and then put her back to bed, no fever yet but it’s not out of the question”
”I’m here and I can hear you Tina!” Bette laughed
”well at least you know what your duties are..” Tina patted Bette’s shoulder and saying goodbye to Shane she collected her things and left leaving Bette and Shane alone.
”Did you want to see me?”
”Yes…come in…”
Helena didn’t look at Tina right away, she was concentrating on some papers, tests, medical records.
”What are you doing?”
”I’m examining…..things.” Helena cut the conversation short ”Bette?”
”Better…”
”You slept there…”
”Y…yes…” Tina sighed ”listen I know you’re angry with me about Angelica and everything…I should have thought about it, I know Hel, I’m sorry…”
”That’s not why I’m worried Tina…even if yes…Angie is a big risk for her, she’s a child, it’s a risk for any sickly person unfortunately, even if Bette adores her, I can see that.”
”Bette knows that Angie will come only after she’s recovered and we’ll take precautions…”
Helena nodded, then looked at Tina.
”You’re not asking me how I know you slept there?”
”Well…simple….De Luca?”
”mistake. I came to check on her and you were…hugging…”
Tina swallowed ”yes…she had a breakdown Hel, I…I…was helpless…the only sensible thing was…to hold her to calm her down.” Helena didn’t look down ”what?”
”it’s nothing Tina…what is there between you? I mean…I know you, I know Bette…I know you don’t do anything that isn’t serious…but…I’m afraid that Bette is too fragile for this, she’s coming out of a complicated relationship and is in a pretty uncomfortable situation, don’t you think?”
Tina thought about it, it was all true but ultimately she felt she wasn’t about to do anything to hurt Bette, in fact, Tina was truly interested in her, it was she who didn’t know what Bette thought of her.
”I know…I know what situation she’s in, I live it Helena…”
”don’t put yourself in a bad mood Tina, for heaven’s sake!”
”I’m not doing it….I don’t know what you want to know…between me and her there’s nothing except the fact that we get along well ok? You asked me to be close to her and I’m doing the same…even Angelica…I introduced them because I know she loves children.”

And that is the reason that the patient always has the final say…. Bette is the one facing a life of being restricted to a room or a bed for the rest of her life. Bette is the one who will face her future whatever that is, not Tina, and not Peggy and not Helena. Bette is an educated physician, and she can read and evaluate the data just for herself. She knows the odds of success or of failure. She knows her own condition… she lives with it every day. In the end she needs to choose between a life as it now exists or the option to possibly overcome that with surgery.
In reality, Tina has no right to interject her opinion. She may love Bette, but there will be no life with Bette as long as she is in her current condition. A solid relationship is not based on daily visits or bringing her child to visit. That assist Bette in dealing with her life, but it is nothing more than friendship for Tina. There is no opportunity to really know who Bette is in this situation. There will be no shared future unless Bette is cured of her heart problems. And that is truly up to Bette.
Thanks for the chapter…
