”you know you’re the best in that field Al..it was just a coincidence…”
”the parents of that child who has yet to be born gave big funds to the hospital, so Peggy owes them a lot…but they don’t even know what a neurosurgeon is from a fetal surgeon, I should have been there..but luckily Tina was good.”
”and what does De Luca have to do with it?”
Alice rolled her eyes ”well she sure didn’t want me near her ass.”
Bette bit her lip, Alice continued to eat as if what she was saying didn’t matter at all while Bette did.
”Everyone knows Karina wants Tina..that’s her goal, she’s a seductress.”
Bette decided to ignore it and began to eat her breakfast calmly before Shane and Helena came in.
”hey everyone here this morning huh?” Alice joked
”well you’re the one who has an operation every week my dear…” Shane teased her by stealing her chips.
”how are you this morning?” Helena sat on Bette’s bed
”normal, good I’d say”
”arrhythmias?”
”not recently, maybe a few weeks without. The new medications also help me rest better.”
”perfect, you’re out of danger, Jackson and I would like to schedule a meeting for this Friday, we’ll talk… so you can decide if…”
”yes… sure…” Bette nodded while Shane and Alice had paid attention to this important conversation.
”Hey Hel, you could have warned us that our friend Tina was a real rockstar… the whole hospital is talking about her”
Bette snorted, uncovering her legs from the blanket.
”the hospital talks about a lot of things, you know?”
”well but Tina and Karina are the dream couple like Cooper and Gaga now.” Shane and Alice laughed at the joke, Helena didn’t, she stared at them snorting ”nonsense…” she said softly.
Helena knew very well Tina’s true feelings, but she certainly couldn’t reveal them, not in front of Bette, not at that moment and not without Tina in front of her.
”stop with the gossip!” she warned them.
”I love gossip, it’s the reason why I work here… but thinking about it…” Alice got up to get some water, she handed a glass to Bette before ”are they a good match for you?”

So Bette does not want the surgery. There is no motivation to take the risk in her eyes.
When you are dealing with someone who has a terminal condition is difficult. And when you are dealing with someone who is in a state of decline and been on this path for two years and basically restricted to a hospital for that amount of time, and has no significant other or family, then depression and the lack of will to follow medical advice becomes a reality. And if there is any kind of stubbornness, it becomes a mountain to overcome. The fear of dying becomes brings death at a faster rate. Maybe Tina can convince Bette to have the surgery for her. However, Bette viewing Tina as just having pity for her rather than true attachment may be another barrier to overcome.
They say doctors make the worst patients. I think that Bette Porter would hold all the records as far as being a bad patient. It is nice that Tina has become her friend…
