LENOX HILL HOSPITAL-8
”Is Tina gay?” Shane asked
”good grief, you’re so blind!”
Bette butted in ”she was with Arizona Robbins, the pediatrician from Seattle who lost her leg in a plane crash, the case everyone knew about a few years ago” she was clearly annoyed to talk about Tina, especially implying that Tina liked another woman ”anyway yes…she’s gay…”
Helena stared at her.
”she had little Angie through insemination…” Bette concluded.
Alice and Shanw were silent for a second until Helena spoke.
”I don’t think this is good for Bette, girls…”
”Well, we pretend she’s home…that’s how we deal with her recovery here…” Shane said sincerely ”that was the plan since…”
”yeah…yeah” Helena was nervous, Shane was right, normalcy was the first thing to implement in front of Bette but now, he knew Bette would suffer. ”I just don’t like hallway chatter”
”that’s also included in normalcy…” Alice said ”Bette practically lives here…”
”Ok, I’m tired..I’m here, I can hear you…anyway go back to your work..I need to rest.” Bette said dismissing them and Shane and Alice left without making too much fuss, even if they knew something was strange.
The room went silent, Bette stared at her breakfast tray, picking at the fresh fruit while Helena watched her, her hands in her lab coat.
”is everything okay?”
”yes… I mean no… I’m very stressed.”
”you don’t have to be…”
Helena’s tone was serious as always.
”I know.. I can’t control it”
”you have to think about your health Bette…”
”I know…”
”no distractions…”
Bette looked up, she was scared and full of problems, she knew that Helena really loved her, she had been in love with Bette in the past, even if for a short time, then she had understood that between her and Beyte it would never work, so their friendship had exploded.
Bette decided that it was certainly not the case to confess her interest in Tina, she was the woman for whom her heart beat so hard, for whom she had lost her head and everything, Tina was the center of her thoughts, but Helena would never accept it. And now they were so close to a solution.

So Bette does not want the surgery. There is no motivation to take the risk in her eyes.
When you are dealing with someone who has a terminal condition is difficult. And when you are dealing with someone who is in a state of decline and been on this path for two years and basically restricted to a hospital for that amount of time, and has no significant other or family, then depression and the lack of will to follow medical advice becomes a reality. And if there is any kind of stubbornness, it becomes a mountain to overcome. The fear of dying becomes brings death at a faster rate. Maybe Tina can convince Bette to have the surgery for her. However, Bette viewing Tina as just having pity for her rather than true attachment may be another barrier to overcome.
They say doctors make the worst patients. I think that Bette Porter would hold all the records as far as being a bad patient. It is nice that Tina has become her friend…
