Love in Control – Chapter II – Savannah (Part 2)

Rian shook her head and exaggeratedly waved his question off.
She walked back towards the student section.
“Okay, let’s start with the two real questions and ignore the third, shall we?”
There was a ripple of laughter.
“Believe it or not the two questions are linked rather well,” Rian said with a smile. She rolled up the papers and held them loosely in one hand. And then she began.
“We are currently working on an exhibit that is about Propaganda, set to open in about a year. As I’m sure you’ve learned in one of your classes, down through history, there have been many artists who’d espoused sincere aspirations about making art for the good of humanity; that they were not interested in merely producing frothy or pretty-to-look-at art.”
“Noo! They were doing “serious” art. In fact, there have been schools or movements of painting styles devoted to the idea that art’s highest or noblest purpose was moral regeneration. Now that is a very high standard, wouldn’t you say?”
There was an appreciative ripple of laughter that responded to her.
She smiled back at them. “Well, amongst their ranks, those schools or movements counted many talented artists whose art continues to be valued and sought after to this day.”
Then she turned serious, no longer smiling at the audience. “So this has been a surprisingly tough exhibit to curate – because the fact of the matter is that these aspirations; these beliefs about noble purposes, have also been hijacked to serve political purposes. There ‘s simply no denying that art history is littered with examples of art, especially those created with so-called noble purposes in mind, that were used for purposes that included mass slaughter of innocent human beings. Whole segments of populations killed for no other reason than that they were not the same as those who used the art for the twisted ends of violent cabals of men, mostly. If you find this shocking or disgusting, it should. There is history, bloody history, behind some of the “great” art that people prize so highly today.”
“And there is damning evidence, too, against the artists who produced such art. So if we are disgusted by the examples of mass slaughter that, in the most real terms, “framed” the art we will put on exhibit, part of our disgust really should be about these great artists who were party to such violence.”

So pleased to read your story!
I don’t care that it isn’t a traditional Bette and Tina story line, but i wouldn’t mind if you give them more time in it ;-)
That was such a heart warming talk between Jade and Rian’s mom.
Thanks for the update!
Just Bette and Tina please!!!
It was a little early for my Pinot Noir, but well worth it, as it perfectly paired with your story. In fact, all of your stories are a full-spectrum sensory experience for me. Like a good glass of wine, I get lost in the color, bathe in the aroma, and relish the taste and texture of your scenes. Your give your protagonist characters a rich personality that I can’t help but instantly root for. While Bette and Tina initially drew me this this site and your stories, I really enjoy your other characters just as much.
Aerin virtually stole the words out of my mouth. If I had a professor like Rian during my undergraduate years, perhaps I would have gotten better than a C+ in my Art History class. I may have even been persuaded to change majors with such impassioned lectures.
As I was reading the dialogue between Jade and Rian’s mom, I was thinking that’s the type of mom I wish we had and we all would become. Well done.
Enjoyed it. Thought TJ was headed for a bad fall. Who’s this Kaci? No drama for Bette and Tina please. Thanks
Sky loved the chapter. Love to read more of Bette and Tina but your on a good path.
I normally am only interested in Bette and Tina stories, but not with this one im loving all your characters , and story lines, i can”t wait to read more. Thank you
Thanks for all your comments don70! Am glad you and others enjoy reading about these characters and am happy you find the different storylines they inhabit interesting. Please do continue to let me know your thoughts as this story progresses – based on actual places and people – as we explore what it means to love, and be stripped bare even if fully-clothed, before another.
Genuine art has the power to strengthen the spirit of the people.
I loved Rian lecture, I applaud the end of the lecture.
And please do not let Tina looks at this Kaci, from what I read,
I realized, it will happen.
The complete constellation.
