Melvin, the Philantropist
Oscar had been introduced to Melvin briefly at the awards dinner, and he’d heard from several of his staff sitting at Melvin’s table including Pat and Hilma how impressed they were with his credentials, but Oscar was a man that believed in due diligence. He liked to know who he was dealing with, especially since being in the non-profit arena attracted some unscrupulous types.
What he learned about the self-made millionaire was very impressive, and most notable was his philanthropy. Melvin’s law firm was a life-time corporate title sponsor of the charity event where he met Maxine and their contributions helped raise millions annually.
Secondarily the PMA Foundation was formed as a partnership between Melvin and Maxine during their early years together to expand their personal charitable giving to include grants made available to reputable independent legal-aid groups and non-profits like the WeHo Family and Youth Center. The main requirement was an interest in partnering with local law firms to provide legal services or establish an educational component that offered financial-aid to students pursuing a Juris Doctor (JD) degree.
Oscar greeted Melvin with a handshake and Tina with a hug inquiring how she was feeling as her due date was quickly approaching. Oscar and Tina hadn’t spoken in weeks except briefly so he took this opportunity to once again congratulate her on the award. Everyone in the room, including Melvin agreed that the center was very fortunate to have someone of Tina’s caliber on the team. After engaging in a bit of small talk, they took their seats and got down to business.
“Melvin, I hope you don’t mind that we did a bit of research on the PMA Foundation?” Oscar smiled as he opened the binder in front of him and indicated for the others to follow.
Melvin opened his binder to the table of contents. “I would expect nothing less from a smart business man.” Melvin answered impressed with how well organized the information appeared. They had even broken it up in sections with clearly marked dividers.
“I take it you did a bit of research on the Center too then?” Oscar ventured liking the candidness of the man sitting across from him.
Melvin chuckled. “I suspect we wouldn’t be having this meeting if both our organizations didn’t pass scrutiny on paper but I’m more hands on. Christina has shared with me the business plan for the Peabody grant, and in conjunction with the tour and having the opportunity to speak to Pat and Hilma I have to say it appears that we share a similar philosophy, mission and value statement for serving humanity.”

OK he’s growing on me!
As you know though BAT I am acquainted with an awful lot of Lawyers! My world of Law was, of course, in the UK but ………
I enjoyed the post but it has left me still a little anxious about his ultimate intentions – sorry :-)
Thanks for the continuing posts BAT really enjoying them.

Hi SassyGran. Thank you. Glad to know he is growing on you. Don’t hold me to any of the law stuff being accurate, as I have no knowledge of it, but wanted Melvin to do something selfless. His original intension was to make up with Kit before he died, and to bring David back to her but all that changed after he found Tina pregnant. Now he wants to be a better person and have a chance at being a grandpa to Bette and Tina’s baby.

Wonderful chapter, thank you very much. It is a pleasure to read something positive about Melvin and the family. Just guessing but, from reading between the lines and having clues from the story it looks as though he might have changed his mind about treatments. I won’t try to guess anymore than that but, thanks for writing him in for a little longer term than we first thought. Would love to see him turn helbitch inside out. That also means that we may get a chance to see Peggy P. show up in this story and what a meeting that would be, two old warhorses from the monied elite crossing swords. Should be very interesting. You haven’t mentioned whether they know of each other so I won’t even hazard a guess about that. Can’t remember now if it was on the show or someone’s story that they knew each other and had interactions of some sort. Anyway that should be a very interesting part of the story. So happy you’re back. Thanks for posting.

Hi Dainty. So glad to hear from you. You were always so intuitive about my story lines, I see that hasn’t changed. I considered Melvin and Peggy knowing each other as they would travel in the same social circle but decided against it since she and Bette are so close. However Peggy will make an appearance, and they just might join forces. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Bibi28. Ha ha, not sure where the old Melvin went, but I like this new version. He’s going to do a lot of good for his family so has to stick around for a while. Thanks for reading and commenting.
