We were introduced to each other by the private secretary and asked to be seated and we would be escorted to the private residence in about 15 minutes. I recognized Ms. Porter immediately as I had read several of her books. I had seen her picture on the jacket covers and I must say that her photos never capture the beauty and the charisma this woman exuded in person. She was very friendly and said that she had read my book on Jacqueline Kennedy and how much she enjoyed it. As bad timing would have it, I was in need to find a bathroom and she graciously insisted that she help me find one. And that was our first adventure together. It was in that search that we found that we had both been invited to be the guest of the Bidens to discuss writing their biographies. And frankly, that did not sit well with me as Ms. Porter had publish far more than I had and was much better known in the biography world than I was.
We made it back to the reception room just a couple of minutes before the secretary returned and escorted us up the stairs to the private residence. President Biden and Dr Biden greeted us and welcomed us to the White House. We then went to the Yellow Oval Room which is a large living room.
They were very welcoming. After a little small talk, they started to get into why they wanted us to come to the White House. Dr. Biden explained that they had both read our books and loved our styles and the detail of our books. President Biden then said “Ladies, I like your books and frankly I cannot choose between the two of you who I want to write my biography. So I am in hopes that if you two have some time together, maybe you would consider doing a collaboration and co-author the book.” I immediately looked at Bette and she decided to respond.
Bette: This is a rather flattering proposal. It’s been years since I have done a collaborative work and I am going to have to do some exploration as to if that is even possible.
President: That is what this weekend is all about. To give you two an opportunity to get to know each other and to see if it is even a possibility. So… let me give you the agenda for the weekend. Tonight, you Ms. Porter will occupy the Lincoln Bedroom and you Ms. Kennard will occupy the Queens Bedroom. We will have dinner at 7:30 and after which Jill and I will retire to the President’s quarters. Jill has to go to work tomorrow and I have several meetings as well. You two will pack up and you will be taken to Camp David about lunch time. Jill and I will join you tomorrow afternoon and we will spend the weekend there. We can dress a little more causally and there are more activities beside talking that we can enjoy. There is an indoor pool we can use and if the weather permits, we can do some horseback riding. It’s a lot less formal than White House.

I love how they meet, their time at Camp David and the natural progression they took together.
Try really are perfect for each other and your story certainly reflects that.
I still can’t bear to think of them not being together!

First of all this story is an alternative time and life for our Bette and Tina. The story is being told by a woman who is older (85 years old) and has experienced a full and joyful life with the woman she loved. They have had more than 40 years together even though they didn’t meet until they were middled aged. I like that they took the time to get to know one another for a few days before charging into a romantic relationship. I like that Bette insist that Tina think about her own life and if she is prepared for the changes which will occur as they start to see each other romantically. Bette wants Tina to make her decision about her life knowing the possible downside. For me, that shows immediately how much Bette respects and cares for Tina right out of starting gates. I also like that Bette insist they talk about things fully as they go. She seeks out Tina’s boundaries and comfort level before they do anything. This is why their relationship is so strong…. they hide nothing from each other.
From the idea to publication, I took 4 days… I enjoyed writing this story because I could see that both Bette and Tina would go from a mundane life to a life of love and devotion within a matter of weeks. And it would result in a lifetime of happiness. Isn’t that what we all want in our lives?

OneStorm1 – Thank you for reading… I published this a little more than a year ago and I posted it this year on Achieve of Our Own. I do have three long book stories which is a single series and one other one shot which is about the same length as this one. I then not to writer about angst and problems between Bette and Tina. I think there are plenty of authors who present those kind of stories. All my published stories are on this website.
