    The Conversion

Bette: That’s because the Lincoln bedroom has been a guest room for the most part where the Queens bedroom for many administrations has belonged to a resident. It truly is a lovely residence. Smaller than I imagined it would be. But it is what, 230 years old?  But it is still beautiful.

Tina:  So how much time do we have before we need to be ready for dinner?

Helena:  I’ll come and get you two in about 45 minutes. I’ll get your clothing needs information after dinner and after we have had our tour of the residence. Whatever you need will be here by noon tomorrow. You two will be taken by Marine One to Camp David at 2:00 pm tomorrow. So, you will have breakfast here in the President’s dining room. You two have the morning to possibly have a tour of the public areas and the basement tomorrow morning. I am afraid you will not be able to visit the West Wing as it is not public knowledge that you are here. You are the private guests of the President and he would prefer to keep it that way for a few weeks.

Bette:  I understand. I would rather not be hounded by the press so I would like to keep this private as well.

Tina: You get no objection from me.  So, are we wearing jogging suits?

Bette: Sounds good to me. That is what the Bidens said they were wearing.  Nice room Tina. I assume you have a private sitting room and bath as well?

Helena:  Yes, right through that door. Would you like to see?

    Bette: Please.

We walked through and saw the sitting room and bath. The sitting room was set up with a desk and computer as well as sofas and chairs.

Tina:  Looks like a great place to write.

Helena: I am going to leave you now.  I’ll be back in about 45 minutes.

Bette returned to her room and so did I and began to get ready for dinner. I found my forest green velour jogging outfit and went and took a quick shower, applied some light makeup and brushed my hair out. I put on a pair of sneakers and thought I was ready for dinner with the President and the First Lady of the United States.  In a way it felt that I was being disrespectful but this was the instructions from the First Lady. So, I went into the East Sitting Room to wait for Helena and for Bette to go to dinner. Bette came out of her room dressed in a deep blue jogging suit with her hair pulled back in a pony tail. She looked relaxed.

      • Janice24,

First of all this story is an alternative time and life for our Bette and Tina. The story is being told by a woman who is older (85 years old) and has experienced a full and joyful life with the woman she loved. They have had more than 40 years together even though they didn’t meet until they were middled aged. I like that they took the time to get to know one another for a few days before charging into a romantic relationship. I like that Bette insist that Tina think about her own life and if she is prepared for the changes which will occur as they start to see each other romantically. Bette wants Tina to make her decision about her life knowing the possible downside. For me, that shows immediately how much Bette respects and cares for Tina right out of starting gates. I also like that Bette insist they talk about things fully as they go. She seeks out Tina’s boundaries and comfort level before they do anything. This is why their relationship is so strong…. they hide nothing from each other.

From the idea to publication, I took 4 days… I enjoyed writing this story because I could see that both Bette and Tina would go from a mundane life to a life of love and devotion within a matter of weeks. And it would result in a lifetime of happiness. Isn’t that what we all want in our lives?

Thank for reading and for commenting on this story… until I saw your comments, I didn’t think anyone had read it…. Thank you for your support and encouragement…

      • OneStorm1 – Thank you for reading… I published this a little more than a year ago and I posted it this year on Achieve of Our Own. I do have three long book stories which is a single series and one other one shot which is about the same length as this one. I then not to writer about angst and problems between Bette and Tina. I think there are plenty of authors who present those kind of stories. All my published stories are on this website. Go to the story search page, put my name in under author (Martha3128) and they are all listed.
