The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 1

The kitchen was bathed in sunlight from a bank of windows that ran the length of the room. The floor here was white quartz, smooth and shining. Black granite countertops lined the room and the cabinets were white. The room felt light and airy, adorned with silver appliances and silver-accented light fixtures. Alice walked to the island in the center of the kitchen and grabbed a black tea kettle, filling it with water before placing it on the island’s glass stove top.

She headed for one of the cabinets, producing a set of matching dark grey teacups and saucers. There were tea bags in a glass container on one of the counters. Alice fished around in there until she came up with two rooibos. Placing one bag in each cup, she tossed her dearest friend a loving gaze. “This should help you relax and settle in. Let’s have tea and then I’d love it if you just went to lie down.”

    Bette nodded. “Okay.”

“How about you go get changed? Do you want me to run you a bath? Will that make you feel better?” asked Alice.

Bette cleared her throat. “No, I don’t need a bath. Actually, I think I’m okay Alice. I don’t want any tea. I just need to lie down. I’ll feel better with a little rest.”

    “Are you sure?” asked Alice.

Bette was sure. She needed to assess what the fuck was going on. And she needed to do so alone. Her heart was warmed by the gentle way in which Alice was caring for her. Yet caring for Bette was Tina’s role. Alice doting on her felt odd. And where the fuck was Tina? Where was her girlfriend? Why didn’t Alice even know her?

The vibe she was getting from Alice wasn’t one shared between lovers, but one shared between friends. Bette had to get a handle on how and why her world was now upside down. She was still betting heavily on all of this being a dream and so she politely declined tea with Alice and ushered her out the front door before turning around to face the empty house alone.

Her eyes scanned the living room, taking in the tastefully decorated walls and comfortable, yet classic furniture. A white linen couch and armchair, glass coffee table and dark gray area rug in the center of the room. The painting of Dana in shades of blue was in this room and she studied it once more before padding down the hallway in her bare feet. There was a photo in black and white of her father hanging on the wall. He also looked older and wore a winsome smile, clad in a suit and tie. There was another photo of her sister Kit, smiling next to a boy who looked to be around 10 years old. The boy and Kit shared the same brown sugar skin and confident smiles.

    1. I must say i absolutely not expected this turn of event. And for now i don’t know how i feeling about it. Very unexpected.

I really loved the story about young students Bette and Tina in 2005 and how they were in love to each other. And what happen to that Tina? Her Bette just died on her hands in that universe or what? What happen to them – i like, no i need to know.

    2. I’m think i’m up and would continue to follow this story, but i would be very grateful if you’ll explain in this storyline destiny of those Tibette in 2005 after that Bette’s collapse

    3. This was a complete surprise!! I wonder if The L Word – Generation Q will use something like this for its story line? We are now in an alternative universe where Tina Kennard just doesn’t exist or if she does, she out there among the 8 billion people who reside on the earth. Okay, so Bette has gone from age 18 or 19 to age 33 or 34 in this story? Or perhaps she’s older than that? In this new universe there is Alice and there is Dana, but Dana left “us”. Why does Bette have a portrait of Dana in her home? She must be someone very important in Bette’s alternative life to be the only photo or portrait in the house except for the picture of Melvin, Kit and David?

I’m with Zhenya. There must be some explanation as to what happened to 2005 universe for Bette and Tina.

    4. I’m intrigued! Keep ’em coming, I can’t wait to read more. But I do hope that Bette will be able to find Tina. Or Tina will find Bette as she experienced the same ride through a vortex…or whatever it is :-)
