The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 1

She continued to breathe in the cool air. This had to be a dream. Or a waking nightmare. She’d wake up any moment and Tina would be there. How could Alice not know Tina? And why had Dana left? Where was she? None of this made any sense.

“Let me put on the air for you,” said Alice. She turned the AC on full blast, pointing the vents toward Bette. She rolled up the window and grasped her friend’s free hand.

Bette managed a weak smile and looked at Alice again. The world around her was still confusing. Alice looked like Alice, but she didn’t look like Alice. She was older and her hair was longer, fuller. It fell a little past her shoulders. And Alice was wearing full lipstick. Alice never wore full lipstick. As her dark eyes moved from Alice’s red painted lips downward, she noticed the black, short-sleeved dress, the tasteful dark orange earrings hanging from Alice’s lobes. This Alice was mature. She was softer. More feminine.

Bette studied the road and the cars around her. Everything looked the same, but not the same. The curves on the vehicles seemed smoother, more aerodynamic. And the billboards were nearly all digital, the advertisements changing as they drove.

“2019?” Bette whispered. This has to be some mistake. A dream. Must be a dream. I’ll just close my eyes and then everything will go back to normal.

Alice wasn’t convinced that her friend was alright. But Bette Porter was stubborn to a fault and Alice didn’t want to upset her any more than she already was. She held on to Bette’s hand tightly and sighed heavily, hoping that she was making the right decision. She spoke gently, using the same voice she used with children and old ladies. The talking helped her to relax. She gave Bette an update on her latest date, hoping to keep the conversation light and easy. Though Bette didn’t say anything, she’d squeeze Alice’s hand from time to time, tossing her a reassuring smile as well.

They pulled into the driveway of a one-story craftsman that had a beautifully landscaped front lawn. There was a midnight blue, two-door coupe parked in front of them. Bette’s eyes grew wide as she took in her surroundings.

    1. I must say i absolutely not expected this turn of event. And for now i don’t know how i feeling about it. Very unexpected.

I really loved the story about young students Bette and Tina in 2005 and how they were in love to each other. And what happen to that Tina? Her Bette just died on her hands in that universe or what? What happen to them – i like, no i need to know.

    2. I’m think i’m up and would continue to follow this story, but i would be very grateful if you’ll explain in this storyline destiny of those Tibette in 2005 after that Bette’s collapse

    3. This was a complete surprise!! I wonder if The L Word – Generation Q will use something like this for its story line? We are now in an alternative universe where Tina Kennard just doesn’t exist or if she does, she out there among the 8 billion people who reside on the earth. Okay, so Bette has gone from age 18 or 19 to age 33 or 34 in this story? Or perhaps she’s older than that? In this new universe there is Alice and there is Dana, but Dana left “us”. Why does Bette have a portrait of Dana in her home? She must be someone very important in Bette’s alternative life to be the only photo or portrait in the house except for the picture of Melvin, Kit and David?

I’m with Zhenya. There must be some explanation as to what happened to 2005 universe for Bette and Tina.

    4. I’m intrigued! Keep ’em coming, I can’t wait to read more. But I do hope that Bette will be able to find Tina. Or Tina will find Bette as she experienced the same ride through a vortex…or whatever it is :-)
