The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019: Chapter 1

Alice squeezed her hand. “Welcome, home Sweetie. Let me get you situated. Maybe you can have some tea or something. I want to get you settled in before I leave.”

Bette’s wide eyes met Alice’s soft brown pools. “Leave?”

“Yeah. I have to get some writing done. There are a few script changes in the works. I want to get a handle on things before the weekend’s over.”

The dark curls nodded. “Script changes,” she repeated softly.

Alice pressed a button near her dashboard and turned off the car. She sat back in her seat and pulled the shades from her eyes. “Bette, I don’t think I can leave you alone. I had a meeting later but I’m going to cancel it. I’ll sit with you until you feel better, okay?”

Bette was quiet, her eyes studying Alice. She replied softly, “No. I need to be alone for a minute. Is that okay? Can you check on me later? I’d feel better if you did.”

The barest hint of a smile eased itself into the corners of Alice’s red painted lips. Bette Porter never had soft edges. She was always quick and decisive, flitting between flirty and fun or angry and surly. This Bette was gentle and reserved. “I’ll absolutely check on you later,” she replied.

As soon as they made it through the front door, Bette pulled the dark red pumps from her feet. She stared at the height of the heel on the right shoe. “These are fucking killing me. Who wears high heels to fly on an airplane and run through the airport?”

Alice quickly replied, “You do.” She hugged Bette to her tightly. “I’m worried about you. I’ll check in on you. If I still feel this worried, we are going to the hospital. Deal?”

Bette nodded absently. “Okay Alice. That’s fine.” The humming was gone now. It had been ebbing and now it was entirely gone.

Alice closed and locked the front door behind them, her black pumps sounding loudly on the shiny wooden floor. She headed for the kitchen, her steps determined, her brain churning with confusion as to why Bette was acting so strangely.

Bette followed her, trying her best not to look like a tourist in what she guessed was supposed to be her own home. The walls were painted a muted soft gray and art hung from the walls. There was a painting of Dana in shades of blue. Dana was smiling, wearing a tennis skirt, a racket in her hand and headband around her hair. She looked stronger and older than she really was.

    1. I must say i absolutely not expected this turn of event. And for now i don’t know how i feeling about it. Very unexpected.

I really loved the story about young students Bette and Tina in 2005 and how they were in love to each other. And what happen to that Tina? Her Bette just died on her hands in that universe or what? What happen to them – i like, no i need to know.

    2. I’m think i’m up and would continue to follow this story, but i would be very grateful if you’ll explain in this storyline destiny of those Tibette in 2005 after that Bette’s collapse

    3. This was a complete surprise!! I wonder if The L Word – Generation Q will use something like this for its story line? We are now in an alternative universe where Tina Kennard just doesn’t exist or if she does, she out there among the 8 billion people who reside on the earth. Okay, so Bette has gone from age 18 or 19 to age 33 or 34 in this story? Or perhaps she’s older than that? In this new universe there is Alice and there is Dana, but Dana left “us”. Why does Bette have a portrait of Dana in her home? She must be someone very important in Bette’s alternative life to be the only photo or portrait in the house except for the picture of Melvin, Kit and David?

I’m with Zhenya. There must be some explanation as to what happened to 2005 universe for Bette and Tina.

    4. I’m intrigued! Keep ’em coming, I can’t wait to read more. But I do hope that Bette will be able to find Tina. Or Tina will find Bette as she experienced the same ride through a vortex…or whatever it is :-)
