The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 3
“Definitely.” Bette replied.
Tina’s day had gone from bad to worse. After church, her parents, grandparents, and a few family friends had hovered around the young blonde. Beseeching her with probing questions and fixated smiles. Tina tried to be as polite and responsive as she could and when her parents announced they were all heading out to an early Sunday meal, she tried to keep up her false smile and stem the sense of dread that came rushing over her.
As they settled in to a late lunch at bistro not far from church, the questions continued on.
“Are you still dating that young man? I think his name was Aaron,” asked 68 year old Mrs. Glenda Pike.
Tina swallowed thickly, sensing the tension that had begun to seep from her mother. In Tracy’s mind, Eric was “The Idiot that had stolen her daughter’s virginity and nearly gotten her pregnant”. And no amount of education, life-choices, or professional successes would change Tracy’s view of him. The almost-mention of his name strummed a dormant chord of irritation against Tracy’s nerves.
Tina glanced to her mother and gave a small smile before replying, “It’s Eric. We’re not seeing each other anymore.”
Mrs. Glenda Pike’s mouth opened wide like a fish out of water and she gasped, “Oh no. He was such a wonderful young man.”
Mr. Pike just chuckled and sipped his wine. “Nonsense. A beautiful young girl like Tina…I’m sure she has a string of replacements for old Aaron.”
“Eric,” Glenda corrected him, with a gentle tap to his shoulder.
Mr. Pike shrugged his shoulders and said, “Whatever,” before winking at Tina.
Edward Pike had always been fond of Tina. He had a cool and friendly demeanor that hovered somewhere between a mentoring Godfather and a horny pervert. She’d never been able to determine which category Edward Pike actually belonged to, but Tina knew he wasn’t the type of person she wanted to be left alone in a room with.
The chatter and discussion continued on around them. The topic of discussion bounced from Tina to the young woman at her side. Kaylie Stevenson was another college freshman home for the summer. Kaylie and Tina had grown up in church together and hadn’t spoken since the previous summer. Kaylie always looked like she’d walked off the cover of teen magazine. Every hair in place, every stroke of makeup applied with perfection. And their distance of the past year was simply due to their stark difference in character.

that was fun. thx
Hey MTS, Thanks for another great update. I hope Tina takes Bette’s advice and tries to enjoy her time at home instead of sitting around sulking. I’ve only seen Laurel Holloman in Angel (the tv series) and it was such a different vibe than Tina, but she still rocked the role. PPS!
Geez I thought they were gonna be apart ‘all’ summer not just a week…or is it longer? The way T’s feeling a week equals forever. Love your story as always. Thx.
Hello MTS, Wonderful to have another fine and fabulous chapter from you. I just love how Bette and Tina’s worlds are opening up. Yes, they belong together and each know this but it doesn’t mean that they can’t experience the rest of the world. Bette need’s time to get to know her mother and her life. Good to see that Bette has an ally in Richard. I am sure he can guide her through the ups and downs of the NYC gay scene. And Tina does need to chill out and be herself around her Mom and Dad. There is a sense taht they both love and cherish her. OK being gay might be a shock to them and not the type of information they want broadcast around town but it is who Tina is. I do hope that if they find out then they remember that Tina is their child and deserves their love not matter who she loves. Just so heartfelt and emotional. I love every word. I jst can’t wait to read more of this delicious drama. Thank you so much for continuing this journey with Baby Bette and Tina. Your Loyal Fan.
Aww, our girls are missing each other. Wish Tina will enjoy herself though. PPS

i wonder if tina’s family will find out about her and bette in the week that tina’s stays with them and if they will, what will be their reaction…thanks for update
This story is so wonderfully written. The dynamics between Tina and Bette and their Moms are spot on to the situations you’ve laid out. I look forward to reading more and finding out if Tina comes out to her family.
Two words…Text messages :)
That was great!
