The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 3
“Yes it was.”
“And judging by the brightness in your eyes, Tina must have been kind to you too.”
Bette blushed and looked down into her coffee. ”Something like that.”
Richard smiled and leaned forward, his head resting comfortably against the flat palm of his right hand. “I gotta tell you. When I first met you, you just totally gave off this hetero-vibe. You could have fooled me.”
Bette smiled. “A year ago, I was fooling myself.”
“And Tina changed that?”
“Not just Tina. I was ready to understand who I was. Ready to explore. What about you? You’re not exactly readable. When I first saw your boxed blue eyes I thought you were a handsome hetero playboy.”
Richard shook his head. “Nah. I’m just me.”
“So what’s your story, Richard? You tell me something I don’t know.”
Bette’s new friend cocked his head to the side as he thought. “I’ve got the same struggling story as half the Village. I’m a writer. A struggling writer.”
“What do you write?”
“Fiction mostly. I love fiction. I love re-writing reality. It’s powerful and stimulating and it’s totally what I want as my life’s occupation. But…until I finish my novel and get it published, I’m your mother’s driver.”
Bette smiled. “How is my mother when I’m not around?”
“Surprisingly like she is when you are around. She’s sweet. Much nicer than anyone else I’ve ever driven. She’s quiet a lot. Work keeps her pretty busy. And while I’m driving I let my mind go and use that time to create my storylines.”
“What’s your book about?”
“A gay young man who struggles between the hetero and gay worlds because he’s not straight but he’s not quite ‘gay’ enough.”
Bette sipped her coffee. “Is it autobiographical?”
Richard gave a small smile. “Isn’t every piece of fiction someone’s autobiography?”
With a shrug, Bette replied “I guess so.”
“What are you studying at the grand ole University of Clandestine Lesbian Affairs?”
The dark-haired young woman laughed at his interpretation of UCLA’s initials and replied, “Art History.”
Richard gave a mock look of distress. “People actually study that stuff?”
“Yes they do.”
“Sounds just as interesting as watching paint dry. Do they offer a major in paint drying as well?” he asked.

that was fun. thx
Hey MTS, Thanks for another great update. I hope Tina takes Bette’s advice and tries to enjoy her time at home instead of sitting around sulking. I’ve only seen Laurel Holloman in Angel (the tv series) and it was such a different vibe than Tina, but she still rocked the role. PPS!
Geez I thought they were gonna be apart ‘all’ summer not just a week…or is it longer? The way T’s feeling a week equals forever. Love your story as always. Thx.
Hello MTS, Wonderful to have another fine and fabulous chapter from you. I just love how Bette and Tina’s worlds are opening up. Yes, they belong together and each know this but it doesn’t mean that they can’t experience the rest of the world. Bette need’s time to get to know her mother and her life. Good to see that Bette has an ally in Richard. I am sure he can guide her through the ups and downs of the NYC gay scene. And Tina does need to chill out and be herself around her Mom and Dad. There is a sense taht they both love and cherish her. OK being gay might be a shock to them and not the type of information they want broadcast around town but it is who Tina is. I do hope that if they find out then they remember that Tina is their child and deserves their love not matter who she loves. Just so heartfelt and emotional. I love every word. I jst can’t wait to read more of this delicious drama. Thank you so much for continuing this journey with Baby Bette and Tina. Your Loyal Fan.
Aww, our girls are missing each other. Wish Tina will enjoy herself though. PPS
awe they miss each other and i think tina’s family will find out sooner than later, but i wonder how hey react?? :)
i wonder if tina’s family will find out about her and bette in the week that tina’s stays with them and if they will, what will be their reaction…thanks for update
This story is so wonderfully written. The dynamics between Tina and Bette and their Moms are spot on to the situations you’ve laid out. I look forward to reading more and finding out if Tina comes out to her family.
Two words…Text messages :)
That was great!
