The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 3

When the volume of surrounding conversations got loud enough to cover their discussion, Kaylie leaned over to Tina and whispered, “So who are you dating these days?”

Now back home in San Francisco, her sexuality hidden by a thick cloak of pre-UCLA historical context, Tina was most definitely a classic closet case. When Kaylie’s words registered in her mind, a fast-moving shade of crimson started at Tina’s neck and journeyed quickly to her tanned cheeks. She looked down and pulled her hair behind her ears.

Bette’s name danced on her tongue and her lip slightly quivered before she replied, “I’m not really dating any guys right now.”

“Really? I guess that’s a good thing. You and Eric were like sewn together at the hip. It was kind of gross,” Kaylie replied.

Tina sipped her water. “You think so?”

Kaylie shrugged. “I don’t know. I just think it may be good for you to get around and play the field. No harm in that.”

Tina nodded. But she knew her days of field playing were done. If she’d had a magic lamp, she’d have rubbed so hard the genie would have come tumbling out. And for her three wishes she’d wish that (1) She and Bette were together in this moment, (2) financially independent, and (3) vacationing together at their summer home in “Somewhere Tropical”.

“Can I ask you a question?” said Bette.

    “Sure,” Richard replied.

“Are your eyes really that blue?”

Richard chuckled and his eyes crinkled. “This blue is called ‘Icy Mist’ and it comes in a box.”

    “I knew it!”

“All the boys like it. And I like it too. My real eye color is brown and it’s so uninteresting.”

Bette smiled. “Well, you’re very interesting.”

“So tell me something I don’t know, Bette. Tell me about your lady friend. What’s her name?”

Bette took a sip of her coffee and began to speak as she gingerly placed the mug back on its saucer. “Her name is Tina.”

“Mmmmm. Tina. She sounds exotic. How’d you meet?”

“She was my roommate at school this year.”

Richard’s eyes grew wide at this revelation. “Fate was certainly kind to you.”

    3. Hey MTS, Thanks for another great update. I hope Tina takes Bette’s advice and tries to enjoy her time at home instead of sitting around sulking. I’ve only seen Laurel Holloman in Angel (the tv series) and it was such a different vibe than Tina, but she still rocked the role. PPS!

    4. Geez I thought they were gonna be apart ‘all’ summer not just a week…or is it longer? The way T’s feeling a week equals forever. Love your story as always. Thx.

    5. Hello MTS, Wonderful to have another fine and fabulous chapter from you. I just love how Bette and Tina’s worlds are opening up. Yes, they belong together and each know this but it doesn’t mean that they can’t experience the rest of the world. Bette need’s time to get to know her mother and her life. Good to see that Bette has an ally in Richard. I am sure he can guide her through the ups and downs of the NYC gay scene. And Tina does need to chill out and be herself around her Mom and Dad. There is a sense taht they both love and cherish her. OK being gay might be a shock to them and not the type of information they want broadcast around town but it is who Tina is. I do hope that if they find out then they remember that Tina is their child and deserves their love not matter who she loves. Just so heartfelt and emotional. I love every word. I jst can’t wait to read more of this delicious drama. Thank you so much for continuing this journey with Baby Bette and Tina. Your Loyal Fan.
