The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 5

“Did you review the information we discussed last week?” asked Valerie.

    “Yes, I did.”

Valerie finally cracked a small smile. She knew Bette had been doing her homework. She’d seen the young woman walking around the museum. And when she hadn’t seen her, she’d had several other direct reports watching the promising young woman and reporting back to Valerie on her progress.

“Excellent. Tell me, Bette, Gustave Courbet, when was he born?” asked Valerie, her emerald-green eyes studying the young woman before her.

    “1819.”

“How many works are we showing?”

    “130.”

“Bette, what is your favorite piece of the Courbet exhibit?”

The appreciation for her favorite Courbet painting swelled within her and filled her dark eyes with awe. “’Sleep’ is my favorite.”

    “Is it?”

    “Absolutely.”

    “Why?”

“The fluidity, the intimacy of the women, the power of love that it provokes.” Bette replied, referring to the Gustave’s painting of two nude women, one brunette and one blonde, wrapped in each other’s arms on a bed of white linens.

“And the Sapphic undertone of the piece? It doesn’t bother you.”

“Absolutely not. It’s breathtaking. The connection and power of love between two women can only be breathtaking to me,” Bette replied, hoping that the strength of conviction in her words wasn’t too strong.

The power in her words wasn’t too strong and as Bette spoke, Valerie understood the boundless potential in the young woman that stood before her. She saw so much of herself in Bette and she was excited for the opportunity to shape and mold the magnificent mind now in her very capable hands.

The pop quiz continued on for a few moments before Valerie released her young protégé. And as the day continued on at break-neck speed, Bette was glad she’d taken the time to learn as much as she had. At 10:00 a.m. a group of high school art students came in for a tour and Bette served as a guide. Though she was nervous, it never showed. And the wondrous combination of her confidence and radiant beauty was enough to hold everyone’s attention. The students could relate to her youth and when she finished the tour an hour and a half later, she felt like an old professional.

    1. Thanks for the update! Love this! I’m glad to see Janice trying to get her family back together, i just hope Bette doesn’t have a cow and understands. I hope Tina and Bette can connect soon, and that Tina does tell Bette about Eric. Tina wouldn’t get jealous of Damon being able to see Bette would she??

    2. Wow, I didn’t remember Bette’s Mom talking about a husband. Does Bette know??? I am glad they are both doing well in their jobs, but hope that they can connect soon. And Tina better tell Bette because otherwise a bad misunderstanding may be underway.

    3. Good chapter. Hope B&T will connet soon and Tina should tell Bette about eric and hope he not stalker Tina. No drama for B&T please. Please post more, thanks!

    4. What an amazing update! We sooo missed this story! We see some progress in B’s mom’s life, as well as the friends in LA. Schedules in different locations can be VERY frustrating and stressful. Tina needs to be honest with B. It will strengthen their communication and relationship. As for Valerie’s reaction to B’s improvements in her outlook and knowledge, just proves that she’s pleased with how well B took the advice. Thanks for posting. We enjoy so much tiny B and T as they are experiencing new things on their lives. PPS- Lucero & Marsha (From Mexico City)

    5. Tina really should speak to Bette and let her know about Eric, but with the time difference she will just have to do it via E-mail. Tina should also express her love for Bette so she will feel secure and not get all jelous and snippy. PPS

    6. B&T needs to reconnect real soon. I think Tina should tell Bette about Eric’s possible reappearance. At this early stage of their relationship and being 3000 miles away from each other, honesty is a very important factor. Thank you for updating this story, MTS. Beautiful writing as always:)
