The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 9

Now the ice in his drink was melting and his red and tired eyes were closed as he leaned back in his office chair and let the sound of his daughter’s voice refresh his spent spirit.

”Daddy?” Bette finally asked, unease at her father’s pause present in her voice.

”I’m still here. How are you, Sweetheart?” he asked.

The slow grin slipped across Bette’s lips. It tugged at her cheeks and reached her dark brown eyes. They sparkled brightly against the soft light of her room.

    ”I’m good, Dad.”

    ”The job treating you well?”

”It is. I’m learning so much. I’m working really hard, but I know it’s going to pay off,” she replied.

”Can you….can you tell me about what you do? What type of responsibilities you have,” Melvin inquired.

Bette’s eyebrows furrowed as she wondered what spirit of friendly chatter had invaded her father’s body. Despite her curiosity at the source of her father’s genteelness, she found herself excitedly filling him in on all the details concerning her summer employment at the MET.

They talked and chatted for over an hour before Bette yawned deeply. A yawn that slid down inside and pulled up her toes. Melvin insisted that they end the call and that Bette get some rest. The dark-haired young woman agreed before softly asking, ”Daddy?”

    ”Yes? What is it?”

”Daddy, do you…do you still hate me?” Bette asked, her voice a whisper in the night.

Though her words were soft, the resounding weight of them was heavy on Melvin’s ears. His eyes watered and answered, ”You are my child. My own flesh and blood, Bette. I could never hate you.”

Bette sniffed. ”It felt like you hated me.”

”No. I could never hate you.”

”Then how do you feel about me? Are you ashamed of me, Dad?”

Melvin sighed and sipped his watered-down scotch. ”You are my pride and joy. The singular success of my existence. I could never hate you. I’m not ashamed of you, Bette. I’m ashamed of myself. I…..” he began, before clearing his throat once more.

”I owe you an apology, Bette. I was out of line. I…I reacted so strongly to you and your lifestyle because I honestly, did not know another way to react.

    1. It’s been so long, but i’m very glad that you decided to continue this story. Thank you!

I’m post again later about this chapter, when i’ll read it.

    2. I have read all the chapters from start to finish. I know this was eleven years in the making. It was a very good story line however, your ending was rather abrupt and incomplete. Is Bette dying here? Or will she make a recovery and go on with her life with Tina? Although it appears to be serious it could be easily treated and just a bump in the weekend for Bette and Tina.

I appreciate your putting this chapter out. I very much would like to see the story continue to a more natural ending such as to wedding of Bette and Tina or to a break-up which they believe is where they want to be or where ever you believe the story will go. But to leave your reader at the entry of the hospital with Bette in a crisis mode and with Tina standing there seeing her lover in pain and agony? The end?

Your writing is very good. I hope you will do more and more often. Thank you for your efforts.

      • Martha, it’s the third part of Roommates. Like i understand it’s the end only of this part, but author wrote about that this story will continue in next part – “The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019”
