The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 9
”I have two children, Elizabeth. I failed your sister miserably. I was too caught up in trying to be a success in the world that I neglected both her and her mother. So much neglect that it was to the detriment of her development. I knew this and then I met your mother. And I thought I had a chance to right my wrongs.
”I had you. I gave you the world so that you might own the world. And when you sat down at the table with me and that young man and your lies, I could not understand how I could have failed a second time.”
Bette shook her head and replied, ”Daddy, you didn’t fail me. You didn’t fail me at all.”
Melvin sighed again. ”Bette, maybe I didn’t. But I felt like it at the time. And I do not like the feeling of failing. I was as angry with myself as I was with you. I needed space away from you. Time to think and process just how I’d failed. Time to understand what I could have done differently so that you would be the young woman I imagined you to be. And then you and Katie showed up at the house. I was confronted with my failures and I snapped. I’m ashamed of my behavior. It’s haunted me since that night. I’m sorry.”
In the soft light of her room, Bette’s eyebrows were still furrowed, her tired brain cells processing her father’s words. His short speech did not match the man she’d known.
”Daddy, I’m still….I’m still seeing Tina,” she said.
”I know. I speak with Katie often. She lets me know how you are doing.”
”How do you feel about that Dad? I love you. And I want to make you happy. But Tina…she makes me happy, too.”
”Your happiness is most important to me. I know you are brilliant. I know you will be successful. I know you are level-headed and grounded. I just didn’t want someone taking advantage of you. I couldn’t bear the thought of you being misled and mistreated.
”Bette, I’m not a gay rights advocate. I’ve never even thought about the gay community to be quite honest and I had always assumed my girls would not at all be involved or associated with such a lifestyle. But I’m learning, too. And I realize that a successful life need not be a heterosexual life.”

It’s been so long, but i’m very glad that you decided to continue this story. Thank you!
I’m post again later about this chapter, when i’ll read it.
Hi welcome back!
I need to read the other chapters first before i can comment.
I hope next week to catch up.
Hey, you’re back, it’s great!
Like others i think i need to refresh your to story and first to reread previous chapters and than comment this.
No! Whats wrong with Bette?? She was ok, and what happen now with her?
I hope you answer this question soon, so waiting for your next post
I have read all the chapters from start to finish. I know this was eleven years in the making. It was a very good story line however, your ending was rather abrupt and incomplete. Is Bette dying here? Or will she make a recovery and go on with her life with Tina? Although it appears to be serious it could be easily treated and just a bump in the weekend for Bette and Tina.
I appreciate your putting this chapter out. I very much would like to see the story continue to a more natural ending such as to wedding of Bette and Tina or to a break-up which they believe is where they want to be or where ever you believe the story will go. But to leave your reader at the entry of the hospital with Bette in a crisis mode and with Tina standing there seeing her lover in pain and agony? The end?
Your writing is very good. I hope you will do more and more often. Thank you for your efforts.
Martha, it’s the third part of Roommates. Like i understand it’s the end only of this part, but author wrote about that this story will continue in next part – “The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019”
I have read all previous Chapters!
I can now proceed to 2019.
Wow!
