The Roommates – Pride & Prejudice: Chapter 9

Bette sighed. ”I’m coming to visit her in a few weeks. I’d like to see you, Daddy. If that’s okay.”

Melvin smiled; his soft brown forehead wrinkled with happy creases. ”I’d like that.”

Bette told her father of her plans and shortly thereafter, she said, ”Daddy, I do forgive you. And I know it’s not easy to think of me as being a lesbian. But please, please, just be patient with me.”

Melvin agreed and they shared warm words before their call ended. The elder Porter then closed down his office for the evening and for the first time in months, he went to his king-sized bed in his large, empty home, and slept soundly through the night.

Alice chewed on a piece of rubbery teriyaki chicken and pretended to read the magazine opened on the table before her. As she chewed, she looked to her right, watching the creepy dark-haired man who’d been eyeballing her from the corner of her eye. She’d been sitting alone at a small table for two at an Asian eatery near her job. It was the kind of place where you placed your order at the counter and were served moments later. The no-frills service was perfect for her solo lunches and the fact that the restaurant stayed clean and had free wi-fi made it one of her favorite local spots.

The combination of the young man’s gaze and her resulting anxiety seemed to chase her appetite away. A mild irritation had built up and settled in the brow between her arched eyebrows. Alice huffed as she tossed nearly half of her lunch into a garbage can, holding her un-read magazine under her arm.

Walking by the table of the young man with the dark hair and wandering eyes, she suddenly stopped, the sound of her heels on the tile ending as she stood in place. Her team had had a staff meeting in the morning and she’d wanted to appear professional; thus the gray, knee-length skirt and three-quarter length starched white shirt that opened to her bust and the heels that had stopped clacking against the tile.

She leaned into the young man, her eyes narrowed and her voice strained through her clenched teeth. “Take a picture, pal. It’ll last much longer, you pervert.”

    1. It’s been so long, but i’m very glad that you decided to continue this story. Thank you!

I’m post again later about this chapter, when i’ll read it.

    2. I have read all the chapters from start to finish. I know this was eleven years in the making. It was a very good story line however, your ending was rather abrupt and incomplete. Is Bette dying here? Or will she make a recovery and go on with her life with Tina? Although it appears to be serious it could be easily treated and just a bump in the weekend for Bette and Tina.

I appreciate your putting this chapter out. I very much would like to see the story continue to a more natural ending such as to wedding of Bette and Tina or to a break-up which they believe is where they want to be or where ever you believe the story will go. But to leave your reader at the entry of the hospital with Bette in a crisis mode and with Tina standing there seeing her lover in pain and agony? The end?

Your writing is very good. I hope you will do more and more often. Thank you for your efforts.

      • Martha, it’s the third part of Roommates. Like i understand it’s the end only of this part, but author wrote about that this story will continue in next part – “The Roommates – Fast Forward to 2019”
