    The Second Step

Bette looked down at Tina’s hand again. She contemplated what Tina had just said.

    “Hmph.”

“What?” Tina nudged Bette’s head with her cheek.

    Tina waited.

“Nothing. I just wish I could’ve met her too.”

    “She would’ve adored you.”

    “You think so?”

    “I know so.”

    “Why are you so certain?”

Bette continued drawing tiny circles on the back of Tina’s hand. Lightly. Like a feather.

“Because you are a bee charmer, Bette Porter.”

Bette turned to look up at Tina.

    “A what?” Bette laughed.

    “A bee charmer.”

    Bette laughed again.

“I forget you’re from the south until you say things like that.”

“Just a line from another one of my favorite movies.”

Bette thought about that for a second.

“Fried Green Tomatoes?” Bette asked with her eyebrows raised.

“That’s right!” Tina smiled showing all of her chin dimples.

Tina inadvertently squeezed Bette’s left breast and rolled her thumb over Bette’s nipple. Bette took note of how that made her feel. She smiled.

    “Shit. Sorry,” Tina froze.

Lessening the grip. Bette pushed Tina’s hand onto her breast and squeezed. Tina cupped Bette’s breast with a little more confidence. She repositioned her hand and allowed her thumb to roam some more. Tina felt Bette’s nipple harden in her palm. Tina was getting wetter by the second.

    Bette smiled. Tina smiled.

“Thank you for putting it on. I know it’s not one of your favorites.”

“I have a different perspective now.”

Tina nudged Bette’s head for her to keep going.

“Before, I saw it as a silly 80s movie with no substance. Today, I really paid attention to themes. I found it fascinating.”

    “Which themes?”

“Ummm. Destiny. Choices. Intentions. Time. Consequences. Family.”

“And why did those stick out to you the most?”

Tina knew she was tiptoeing in a minefield.

“Well, it’s heavily focused on time. On how big or seemingly small, insignificant choices today can have a large or long-lasting impact tomorrow.”

Tina thought about the choices she made that led them to their current situation.

“It also highlights the importance of taking control and personal responsibility over one’s own destiny. A situation can be changed even if it seems otherwise impossible to overcome. The movie does a very good job of depicting how a person’s life can be altered in an instant by one decision.”

    1. Thank you for the new chapter. I can feel my heart in my throat and my hr was over 100 during the reading.
Exquisite writing, honestly! I’d like to say so much more, and analyze more but simply do not have enough words as a non-native EN speaker. I could just die and go to heaven with this story of yours.
