The Slow Burn
Tina (reading aloud):”I have waited for this all my life, to be with you, to see you smile, to hear you laugh”
Bette (finishing the line from memory): ”to hold you when you’re tired and kiss you when you’re sad”.
Tina stops, looking up at her in quiet surprise.
Tina (eyes widening): You remembered?
Bette (softly): Of course. It’s your favorite.
Tina looks at her, warmth filling her chest, and stands on her toes to press a soft kiss to Bette’s cheek. Bette’s fingers tighten slightly around Tina’s, as if holding onto the moment just a little longer. They continue browsing, stopping occasionally to chuckle at the handwritten notes in the margins left by previous readers.
Tina (giggling, pointing at a note in a novel): Look at this ”If you’re reading this, I hope you believe in love at first sight, because that’s what happened when I met you.” J
Bette (smirking): Someone’s a hopeless romantic.
Tina (teasing): Says the woman who memorizes poetry for me.
Bette shrugs, a lazy grin tugging at her lips. What can I say? If love had a language, yours would be poetry, and I’d spend forever trying to learn every word.
Tina’s breath catches for a second, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of the book in her hands.
They make their way to the shop’s cozy reading nook, settling into a cushioned bench by the window. A single cup of coffee sits between them, steam curling into the air like something out of a dream. Tina leans her head against Bette’s shoulder, sighing contentedly as she listens to the quiet hum of the shop.
Tina (softly): I love days like this.
Bette (kissing the top of her head): Me too. Just you, me, and a thousand stories.
Tina tilts her head up, her eyes meeting Bette’s. And if we were a story?
Bette brushes a strand of hair behind Tina’s ear, her fingers lingering like a quiet promise. We’d be the kind of story you don’t just read…. you feel. The kind whispered between lovers in the hush of moonlight, pressed between the pages of old poetry books, waiting to be found by hearts that understand.
Tina exhales softly, her fingers tracing lazy circles over Bette’s wrist.
Bette continues, her voice almost a whisper. We’d be the dog eared page someone can’t bear to forget. A story that lingers, long after the last word is read. The kind that refuses to fade, because love like this doesn’t belong to time it belongs to forever.

One of my favorite lines – “We’d be the dog eared page someone can’t bear to forget. A story that lingers, long after the last word is read. The kind that refuses to fade, because love like this doesn’t belong to time it belongs to forever.” Exactly Bette & Tina.
I’m loving their romantic, sweet interactions. The Slow Burn – I’m here for it. Worried about what Henry will do…
Great story!
Thank you so much
That line is one of my favorites too I really wanted to capture the kind of timeless, unforgettable love Bette and Tina share. I’m so happy you’re enjoying the slow burn and their growing connection. And yes, Henry is definitely the dark cloud looming over their sunshine. Things are about to get even more intense.
Love this story! Can’t wait to read about all the challenges ahead :(
Thank you so much I’m so glad you’re enjoying the story. The road ahead is filled with twists, turns, and tender moments can’t wait to share what’s coming next
Hello, I love this fic. I almost had a heart attack when I read the first chapter, I thought it was going to be a softer beginning. I love their beginning story though. I have a feeling that Henry is going to get aggressive with Tina in an effort to show her they should be together. If not that he will probably try to set Bette up, so Tina thinks she is cheating. I hope she can see through an attempt like that. If he does get aggressive with Tina, I hope Bette catches him in the act and kicks his butt. I am thoroughly enjoying this, please continue.
Thank you so much I know the first chapter came in like a storm definitely not the soft beginning you might’ve expected But I’m so glad you’re loving Bette and Tina’s origin story.
And wow, you’re very on point with your predictions Let’s just say Henry’s not done causing trouble, but Bette’s not backing down either. There are some intense moments ahead, but also a lot of growth,
Thank you again for reading and sharing your thoughts it truly means the world More coming soon.
