When Fate Meets Destiny—Chapter 4
Bette: “As much as I would love to have another child especially one that shared our DNA I’m not going to force you ok. I thought it’s what we both wanted but I see maybe it was more me wanting it than you but I am so incredibly happy with you and Maddie. Please don’t ever think otherwise”
Melissa: “I’m sorry Bette. I just..I-“
Bette: “Shhhh. It’s ok alright. Let’s just focus on what we have now. Ok. I’m happy. We don’t have to talk about this anymore”
There was another brief moment of silence. I’m sure they are hugging each other now. I know I shouldn’t have been listening to their conversation but I can’t help but feel badly for Bette.
Bette: “Listen I have to go get a few things for Tina’s party tomorrow so I’m going to go get that done now”
Melissa: “Oh right. Ok..You want me to go with you?”
Bette: “No. That’s ok. I’ll be back soon. I love you”
Melissa “I love you too”
Right at that moment Skylar pulls up into my driveway and I walk towards her car. I see Bette exiting the pool gate as I open Skylar’s door at she waves and smiles at me
“Hey kiddo!..Where you off too this early?”
Ughhh she called me kiddo. Fantastic.
“Senior breakfast” I say waving back to her
“Oh well enjoy!..I will see you at your graduation” she says getting into her car not even showing any signs of distress from her conversation with Melissa. Either she is good at hiding it or she really is ok. But how could she be. I know I would be feeling gutted.
I sigh and plop down in the passenger seat buckling my seatbelt. I feel Skylar boring a hole in the side of my head
“Skylar don’t you even comment. Let’s just go” I warn her not wanting her to keep reminding of my feelings for Bette and I was certainly never going to mention that conversation I overheard
“I wasn’t gonna say a word” she says in a smirking tone as she backs out of the driveway
Present
As I remember that time I couldn’t help but wonder if they ever revisited that topic. Obviously they only had Maddie. I look at Bette and I know I would have given her the world if could. I would have given her the child she so desperately craved. I would do anything for her if she were mine. I never led on that I knew about her wanting another child especially one that shared her DNA and I’m not going to now. That isn’t any of my business.

Seems that Bette and Melissa worked rather diligently to try to save their marriage. If their problems seem to begin eleven years ago with their move to New York… that’s a long period for things to break down and become unresolvable. And they did move back to Philadelphia a few years later, but still they could not resolve their differences enough to sustain their marriage. Yet, they love each other still. I wonder… did they really love each other? Or perhaps they loved the idea of the other. In some people, they form an image of who the other is and have a tendency to to ignore the reality of who they are. No person is perfect. All people have flaws… a relationship is sometimes determined on whether each one can live with the flaws or not. Perhaps a judgement that the cost out weighs the benefits? Or is there a more suitable partner elsewhere? Something about Bette and Melissa’s relationship says something like this is going on. From the story so far, Bette has been devoted to Melissa and to Maddy. She has not allowed anything to challenge her relationship to Melissa, not even her repressed attraction to Tina. She may not have been honest with herself, but she did not allow it to get between her and Melissa. It appears to me, that between Melissa and Bette, sometimes love just simply is not enough.
Tina’s hearing of the conversation between Bette and Melissa on having a second child is heart breaking. This would be a major issue in this couple where one wants another child and the other is showing signs that it is not going to happen. I imagine that this would not be the only conversation between Bette and Melissa on the subject. I can see that this would be the beginning of the dissolution of their marriage. It would appear that the sole glue to keep them together then would become Maddy.
This was a very thought provoking chapter on Bette’s history. Now that Bette is going to begin to pursue Tina…. I am anxious to see how she does that. Under the right circumstances and the right conditions, I do not think it will take very long for these two to become a couple.
Thanks for the update.
Agree with Martha her opinion on this chapter.
Let’s see how this will go, looks like Bette is making first steps to be closer to Tina.
