Wings of an Angel – Bette and Tina – Chapter 9

Bette anxiously made her way across the rugged terrain to retrieve the child that was seen running through the decayed chrome building; a structure that was crying for release from its endless pain as the impending air slowly crushed the steel beams, sending a shivering portrayal of a ghost-like town.  Bette could not understand how anyone, especially the surveillance team, could miss a child; a living being that can be visibly seen by all.  “This is my career he is messing with.  I am the last person this should be happening to!”  Bette shouted her despair to the heavens as she her anger and aggravation churned in her blood; boiling whereby the bluish green veins were pulsing to get through her caramel skin.  As Bette entered the chilled cruel building; she was captured in the mist of bleak emptiness and became desperately aware of trying to locate the youngster as soon as possible.  Bette thought it would be a good idea to radio John to suggest recruiting a search squad as there was a lot of ground to cover in the five story construction; plenty of invisible hiding places to protect a child.  As Bette reached for her radio, she noticed that the holster was vacant; her hands empty.  Bette calmly closed her eyes, placed her hands strategically on her hips and frantically hung her head in disbelief, “This is the day from hell!”  Bette heard the echo of those screaming words bounce off the oil smeared glass windows that slowly converted into the monstrous hollowness of blackness; chilled words absorbed into absolute nothing as if imitating the butterfly effect.

“Would you like to play with me?”  Bette swiftly reacted with fluent movement to the quiet voice mere inches from her.  As luck will have it, standing before her was a young boy with wild wavy coal black hair, bright penetrating greenish aqua eyes, shaggy eyebrows, petite nose, and small smiling lips; features all combined to create a painting of the cutest little boy Bette had ever seen dressed in a yellow short sleeve shirt, white washed jeans and raggedy two toned blue sneakers.  Bette couldn’t help return his display of honest innocence while wondering how he was able to bypass through security.  “I would love to play with you, but this is not a safe area to do so.  Why don’t we go outside and play in the other building”.  The trust in his eyes slowly disappeared as he did not want to leave the playground that the building represented and then he remembered that he should not talk to strangers; strangers were bad people.  Bette recognized the expression of fear and introduced herself hoping to regain the innocence once again.  Bette kneed to his eye level so as not to be in a domineering position, “My name is Bette.  What is your name?” as she stretched out her hand.  Bette did not move while she diligently waited for a response.  Different expressions flowed between the two residents as the sound of squawking birds was no match for the apparent silence of contradicting wars coursing through his mind; Bette won.
