Wings of an Angel – Bette and Tina – Chapter 9

    Hamilton Harbor Construction Site

It was 8:30 in the morning and the oppressive heat of the sun was already stamping its existence by acknowledging its presence with eighty degree weather, an explosive day to a new beginning.  Today marked the monumental celebration of breaking ground to inaugurate the construction of the Hamilton Harbor Condominium Waterfront Complex.  The waterfront district is Bette’s first major project since receiving her promotion and not only was there the excitement of being rewarded with this huge weight of responsibility; Bette was the only female architect present.  She had proven to herself and many others in this profession that women are just as good, or should I dare to say, women are actually better.  Bette smiled for she knew that many more were to come.

“Hi John.  How are you?”  Bette greeted John, the junior manager, with ease and professional accord.  As they shook hands, Bette noticed that John was not looking at her, but surveying her surroundings; as if he was searching for something or someone else.  “Is Victoria not coming?  I was hoping to see her today; thought she might like to watch the dynamic show from the front row”.  Bette took in the young man’s appearance and had to admit to herself that John was good looking especially with that happy glint of sparkle in his deep blue eyes.  The only problem was his choice in women and Victoria was a bad choice.  Bette didn’t have the heart to tell him that Victoria was on vacation with some guy she met only three months prior.  Obviously, the attraction was one sided because John just didn’t have a clue.  “Victoria hasn’t been feeling well.  She is due to return to work early next week”.  The concern began to show in John’s eyes and before he could investigate any further Bette volunteered, “She’ll be fine John.  She just ate something that didn’t agree with her.  I will tell Victoria you asked about her”.

The morning progressed with little disruption as there were no unnecessary changes warranted before the commencement of the demolishing project.  John and Bette had gone over the blue prints for the thousandth time to ensure that the dynamite was positioned at the agreed coordinates to assure a compact destruction of the building.  “It appears that everything is in order; should be smooth sailing from here.” Bette concluded.  John smiled with confidence and stated, “No worries Bette.  You choose the best team for the job”.  John couldn’t help but be conceited with the perfection of his company’s expertise.  Bette, on the other hand, always had this phobia that nothing was for certain until the last brick was laid to rest; there were no guarantees with this business.  Bette thought to herself, ‘There are no guarantees with life’.  For some reason, she couldn’t shake this feeling of disaster that suddenly overcame her; a feeling that her life, as she knows it, was held in the balance.  Bette couldn’t comprehend what was causing this dreaded prediction to snake its way into her spine, but she wasn’t one to ignore her instincts.  “John, are we absolutely sure that we didn’t miss anything”.  John sighed impatiently and stated, “Bette, we have gone through everything with a fine tooth comb.  There is nothing to concern ourselves with.  Just relax”.  The tone of John’s voice indicated that he wasn’t too thrilled of Bette second guessing his expertise; he was born for this, it was in his blood.  John dismissed Bette’s uneasiness with a smile while thinking to himself, ‘what does a woman know’.  Right at that moment, Bette disliked John’s arrogance and didn’t appreciate her misgivings being discharged because of her gender.  “It’s part of our job John to be sure, no matter what”.
