Wings of an Angel – Bette and Tina – Chapter 9
At two in the afternoon, Bette and John regrouped outside at the trailer after having individual lunches and returning important voicemail messages left on their cell phones. “What in the world was that?” Bette asked as she concentrated her binoculars on the far left side of the building. “I thought you said the area was clear!” John gathered his binoculars hanging around his neck and before viewing the area, looked at Bette and said, “It is clear. I know how to do my job, Ms. Porter”. As he raises the visual instruments to his eyes, Bette responds with irritation in her voice, “Is that so? Than explain to me how a child happens to be running through the grounds of a highly secured area that is about to be blown to bits?” Not waiting for an answer, Bette lowers the binoculars and starts to make her way across the rugged terrain, but stops abruptly to turn around to center her eyes on John. Bette’s tone of voice spoke volumes of her dissatisfaction due to the situation that they both were in. “Just to make sure you know how to do your job, call dispatch and tell them to halt demolition”. Bette ran in the direction that the child had taken quickly vanishing from sight. John was stunned, confused, scared; how in the world, could his security team, miss a child; he was angrier with himself than anything else.
“Mike, this is John. Come in, over”. No response. “Mike, come in, over”. John checked his radio to ensure that the knob was placed at the right frequency, which it was. “Mike, come in, over. Mike, this is serious. We need to halt demolition. We spotted a child in the vicinity. Dispatch, come in, over”. No response. “Can anyone here me? MIKE!!!!!” John looked at his watch and noted that it was five minutes before disaster disintegrated into two deathly graves. “Ms. Porter, this is John. Please make your way back to base. I haven’t been able to get in contact with Mike”. No response. “Ms. Porter. Come in over”. John was getting frustrated; what more could go wrong with this project. “Bette, this is John. Bette!!!” John had a crucial decision to make; warn Bette or make a run to stop Mike from ruining their respectable reputation and hard earned lives. John determined that he had a better chance of reaching his crew first than finding Bette as he wasn’t one percentage certain as to where Bette and the child could be. As John turned to gather another transmitter, he saw his worst fear come to light. “Shit”. In her hurry, Bette had forgotten to take the radio with her and therefore wasn’t aware of the impending life threatening danger should John not be able to reach the demolition crew in time. Without a second thought, John jumped the railing making a mad dash towards the right side of the perimeter. He ran with the wind at his back, pushing himself to the brink of flying on air to reach the team; who were positioned three hundred feet away. John subconsciously replayed a chat in his head, ‘This is not happening. This is just a bad dream. God, give me the will. Please’.
