    Saturday Evening – Chancellor Phyllis Kroll’s Residence

    “Bette I’m so glad you and your team could make it. Leigh has already charmed several of our donors. She is a real find and will be such a wonderful asset to the university. I mean Jodi Lerner had her celebrity but she really wasn’t much of a people person was she? She had a tendency to rub people the wrong way; not a great characteristic when you are trying to get them to part with their money.”

    “Oh I agree. Leigh will be so much more suitable to the task and agreeable to everyone.”

    “Oh there is someone I’d like you to meet. Candace! Candace!” The woman heard her name and turned towards the voice. She could not believe the vision standing next to Phyllis Kroll. She hurried over to Phyllis trying not to show her eagerness to meet one of the most stunningly beautiful women she’d ever laid eyes on.

    “Bette I’d like you to meet Candace Jewel. Candace is the newest member of our board of trustees. Candace this is Bette Porter; Dean of the School of Arts.”

    “Dean Porter. It’s my pleasure. I’m so sorry I missed the meeting and your presentation yesterday. I was traveling and just got back this morning. I did receive a copy of it via email though. I was very impressed.”

    “It’s my pleasure to meet you Ms. Jewel, and thank you. Please let me know if you have any questions on the information.”

    “Actually there were some points that I would like you to elaborate on a bit more if you don’t mind. Being new to the board I’d like to get a better grasp of the overall vision and the action items that will get us to our goal. Phyllis this gathering is a perfect example of the types of things we should be doing to attract donors. I see a lot of alumni and influential people gathered. I was delighted to meet your artist in residence and art professor Leigh Ostin. She told me she’d just started at the university this past week but you’d never know it from speaking to her. She seems very well versed.”

    “Yes it’s quite a coup for us to have her on staff. She will be showing in Carmel and Monterey in a couple of months. Once people get familiar with her work I’m sure they will be even more impressed with her credentials.”

    Seeing that the two were getting along, Phyllis made her leave. “Ladies I must go mingle. Please enjoy yourselves. Dinner will be served in about 15 minutes.”

    Candace had checked Bette out thoroughly but the main thing she was looking for was a band on her left ring finger. She didn’t see one; not that it would have mattered much. She turned on the charm and made her play.
    “Dean Porter?”

    “Yes Ms. Jewels.”

    “Oh please call me Candace.”

    “OK Candace. I’m Bette.”

    “So Bette … may I buy you a drink before we sit down to dinner?”

    4. You would have to throw the monkey wrench into the mix, didn’t you. I have faith that Bette has learned her lesson and if Candace tries anything, Tina will be the first to know.
      Then they’ll team up to slap her down!

    6. Am I right that it was Tina who did the cheating on Bette with Helena? Please do not let Bette get caried away. I hope she’ll put Candace in her place and tell her she’s a married woman!

    7. GM! Thanks for this post! Sorry, I didn’t make the post last night cause my body shut down on me about 9 or so. Plus it was storming here and that helped put me to sleep! I just can’t do Candance!! Pray everyone have a great day. I woke 40 minutes before the alarm had to pee. PPS

    10. Come on TEAM Porter show a little faith in our girl. LadySovjet yes you are correct. In this story Tina cheated with Helena; Bette never cheated and she’s not about to start now. Do you all really think that she would jeopardize her new relationship with Tina- the love of her life, the mother of her child, the woman she’s waited 8 long years to reconcile with? If you think there is a chance Bette would cheat with Candace then I’m not doing a good job of establishing her character :-).

      I threw Candace in the story for fun, and she will be around for a while so just stay tuned. Thanks as always for those who read and choose to comment. I appreciate the silent readers too.
