“And it’s a really cool neighborhood,” one of them was saying. “Lots of young people, maybe a few middle-aged couples, happy kids in the playground, etc. And there’s a nice Italian restaurant. I think the name’s Roberto’s … my mom said we had something called Chianti, and the food there was so good, they called it farm-to-table…”

“Excuse me,” Bette called out. “We’re not open yet.”

The one who’d been talking stopped what she was saying and looked at Bette in surprise. “Really?”

    Bette nodded impatiently, “Uh huh.”

She turned to the delivery man who’d been giving her tips about how to clean the massive La Marzocco Strada he’d just installed for her. “If not chamois, what do you sug-…”

“This used to be part of the sidewalk, you know,” the young blonde strode up to Bette, her friends in tow.

The delivery man looked expectantly at Bette, as if waiting for a signal from her as to whether they’d continue talking.

Bette blew a breath out and half-turned to look at the three. “Perhaps. It isn’t anymore. It should never have been. The sidewalk’s over there, so …”

One of them interrupted her. “We were so excited to see this place when we got in yesterday, miss. Plus we totally understand what you’re trying to do here. We guessed that few people would appreciate that you’re adding a new cultural perspective into literal small-town America here.

Bette tried to cut in, but the blonde one spoke up again. “Yeah, we hope you don’t mind our coming over like this – this place is sharp, very sharp, from the outside, and we love, love what you’ve done with this building, miss. Starting with the stone finish of that staircase thing and this veranda. I told my sister about it, and about the new look of the building, with all this glass and stone and everything … she goes to Rhode Island School of Design, you see, and she said that this is a type of post-industrial design.”

That earned her a big smile from Bette. “Your sister’s right! So you like it, huh?”

The three of them nodded. “But not everyone in town is loving it, so…” the shortest one spoke up again.

Bette shrugged. “Can’t win em all.”

    1. Skydancer, thank you for the update.

I was certain you would bring Tina in the café to meet Bette. But maybe it is Tina and she had to change her name too and needed to hide.

Lena or Tina doesn’t matter at the, moment, Bette can use some tender loving to reliesh her stress.

      • Nice chapter, skydancer. In some email exchanges with @Jacky, she’s passed on to me that she doesn’t expect, nor want writers to self-censor. Just write what you want and let the chips fall where they may. Gotta love that woman. I would just avoid keywords that would be caught by any sniffer. I’m sure you have an idea of what words might attract attention. Other than that, I say bring on the TLC!

    2. Really like this so far. If not mistaken, in the first chapter, I believe that I read that a film crew would be in the area very soon. So if you didn’t change Tinas’ occupation, then that is when she will show up. Right? Must go back and read that first chapter for some clarification of all this. Thanks for sharing. Can hardly wait for Tina to appear.

      • Hi @Jane, I was referring to warning or instructions you see when you start to post a new chapter or story. The warning is new, and informs you that Google is screening for mature content in the text, not just in pics that are posted. Since the site relies on Google providing a platform for it (I think), I took it seriously. I also took it to mean Google is screening other posted chapters (and I’ve posted a bunch of chapters with sexy scenes, so ….). But @Jacky is saying not to worry, so, I guess that means I can (?) does that clear it up for you?

    3. Hmmm, very, very interesting. Our favorite girls having to survive in a Red State, living underground, and communicating thru code! Sort of like life right now! Again. Please keep writing so I can relive this
