Chapter 16
(Renee) It’s OK, I won’t put you on the spot in front of your friends
Renee shrugs and smiles.
(Renee) Call me, I’d love to do it again
She winks at her as she moves away and Tina immediately turns to Bette.
(Tina) I’m sorry, I obviously don’t know who that was
(Bette) You really don’t need to apologise to me
Tina frowns.
(Tina) Really?
Bette responds coldly as she reaches for her drink.
(Bette) Yes, really. You don’t need to consider me. I don’t consider you anymore either
The others all cringe as they watch Tina’s reaction to Bette’s harsh words. Bette places her glass back on the table and then looks over and sees the hurt in Tina’s eyes. Bette immediately feels guilty for speaking so harshly, and they continue looking at each other, unsure of what to say.
Shane clears her throat and decides to try to return to their conversation.
(Shane) Well we’ve all had some shocker dates over the years hey? What about you Dane? Want to share some awkward memories? Make Al feel a bit better?
As Shane and Dana go back and forth recounting some memorable encounters Bette’s eyes remain fixed on Tina, who sits lost in thought and not paying any attention to the conversation. After a while Tina interrupts suddenly, speaking softly as she stands and moves away from the table.
(Tina) Back in a minute
Bette watches her go, following her with anxious eyes as Tina makes her way to the bathroom.
Alice turns to Bette and speaks sternly.
(Alice) You can’t talk to her like that
(Shane) Al, maybe we should stay out of it
Alice looks to her.
(Alice) Why should I stay out of it? Tina is my friend, and this whole fucking thing is confusing enough for her
Alice turns back to Bette.
(Alice) You can’t carry on with her the way that you have been and then turn around and talk to her like she’s your ex-wife
Bette continues looking towards the hallway Tina disappeared down. She stands suddenly and makes her way over.
A short while later, Tina exits the bathroom and finds Bette waiting for her in the hallway. She approaches her slowly and Bette takes a breath as she looks at her anxiously.
(Bette) I’m sorry
Tina comes to a stop in front of her and looks at her for a moment.
(Tina) It’s fine
(Bette) No, it’s not.
Tina continues looking at her.
(Bette) I forgot myself I guess, and drifted back to…
Bette pauses and Tina smiles sadly at her.
(Tina) Reality?
Bette smiles sadly in return.
(Bette) We’ve spoken so awfully to each other for so long now, I don’t think I even think about it very much anymore. But you don’t deserve that
Tina examines her for a moment.
(Tina) Does she?
Bette swallows and stares back at her.
(Tina) I think it might be time for you to explain to me what happened between us
Bette takes a breath and looks at her for a long moment.
(Bette) OK
(Tina) Not here obviously, can I come over tomorrow night?
Bette nods.
(Bette) Angie can stay with Kit
(Tina) OK
Bette takes another breath.
(Bette) OK

I’ve been waiting for this part of the story… Of what happened to them. i love the slow build. Not rushed at all, i love how you make Tina have a personal conversation with everybody and opens and close certain topics. All bases getting attention. Always looking forward to new chapters! After the release of ep2 of GenQ, gosh aren’t we all getting hung up on this great love story?
Thanks again, katynd.
Katynd,
Love the writing style that incorporates patience with drama. U’ve left space for our minds to ponder
. . . . What happened??? Totally agree with Hanna’s assessment
Wow… the question “Does she?” Meaning does the current day Tina deserve to be treated harshly? And the key word is deserve… This may be the conversation which brings Tina back to the present day. This may be the necessary conversation which Bette needs to motivate her (Bette) to seek a solution rather than to perpetuate the continued present environment and relationship. In the beginning before this memory loss happened, Tina appeared to want to have a conversation with Bette to change their relationship to a less hostile relationship. But Bette did respond positively to Tina. Bette is angry about something and has built walls that Tina could not breach. This is going to be an interesting conversation…
Thank you for the chapter…. we are edging closer to know what has put Bette and Tina into such a hostile relationship of the present… I hope that they all come out better people as a result… but I see that both Bette and Tina are probably going to suffer some pain and anguish as a result. I hope not… but the time seems ripe for everyone to face what the situation is. You cannot fix that which you do not know is broken.
Look forward to the next chapter.
It’s been building to this moment. This will probably be the moment that brings Tina back to current day. Love this story, by the way.
Oh my, we are inching closer to the truth of what happened between them.
It certainly look likes Bette blames Tina for what happened back then and still is very angry about it.
So looking forward to their conversation. Or maybe not because my heart will break.
Thanks for posting. We really appreciate your time and hard work in keeping us entertained. Just speculating. Who is Renee? What was her relationship with Tina? She acted as if they had more than a friendship. Am I warm? PPS
