    Chapter 17

(Tina) I actually wouldn’t have thought you would want it either. Whenever I’ve imagined that stage in our life, starting a family, I imagined we’d approach it as we do everything else. Sharing the responsibility and finding a balance

Bette looks at her for a long moment before shifting her gaze to her wine glass, deep in thought. Tina watches her closely and Bette eventually looks up and meets her eyes.

(Bette) That’s something I probably haven’t reflected on all that much, but I think you’re right. Us making that decision was weird in itself. I think that means that maybe we went wrong even earlier than that

    (Tina) When then?

(Bette sighs) Marrying maybe? Our civil ceremony

(Tina frowns) You think that changed things?

(Bette) Well, maybe not that in itself, but just everything that went with moving into that next stage of our relationship. Marriage and starting a family

Bette pauses and has a sip of wine.

(Bette) I wonder if we held ourselves to some ridiculous expectation of what that meant, rather than just continuing to be ourselves. Started behaving like we thought we should, rather than what either of us wanted

Bette has another sip of wine and Tina watches her.

(Tina) It’s interesting that my mind went back to immediately before that. I guess the exact moment before we went wrong?

    Bette looks at her.

    (Bette) Yes, I guess

(Tina sighs) My therapist thinks I’m trying to tell myself something with the choice of time

They both sit with their thoughts for a while, before Tina turns to her.

(Tina) So our dynamic changed. And we didn’t talk about that?

    Bette shakes her head.

(Bette) No, something else we stopped doing

Bette sighs and looks downwards, gathering herself before continuing.

(Bette) And then we lost the baby

    Tina takes a breath.

(Bette) And then we fell apart

    They meet eyes.

(Bette) That was when I cheated

Tina watches her, taking this in.

(Bette) It wasn’t meaningful or anything at all to do with feelings for that person, or anything like that. I don’t mean that as any excuse, but it just really wasn’t

Tina nods and lowers her eyes, and Bette examines her for a moment.

(Bette) Do you want to know details? Of what happened, and that person?

    Comments

    1. Finally K! I think Tina had a mental breakdown with all the anger and frustration. They know they loved each other so much. They have to do the work. PPS

    2. Wow, so much anger over events that happened a long time ago. Sometimes it’s easier to hang on the anger.

Maybe Tina had a mental breakdown like majicspider60 already mentioned.

Can they work this out after Tina is back in the present, is Bette willing to make a move when Tina doesn’t remember this time if she returns?

Thank you for this brilliant written story!

    3. I believe Tina is right…. they can work it out whether Tina remembers this relationship during her amnesia or not. The feelings and the desires are there in both instances. It is up to Bette to want to agree to give reconciliation or at least civility a try. Tina has already made movement in that direction… Bette just meet her halfway and talk to her. Find a way to drop the predisposition that she will still be angry. If you Bette make an effort to at least communicate and Tina responds, there is a chance to get over these hurtles. Most of all drop this idea that it cannot be fixed. Maybe it can…. You both need to try. Neither of you have anything to loose by trying…. You have a horrible relationship as it is. Talking can possibly make it better.

Thanks for the update… this is a very good story.

    4. It has been the same for so long that Bette feels there is no reason to try to fix all the wrongs between them, but I think she is willing to risk her heart to see Tina back in her life in some capacity as long as it is not hate filled anymore. Hopefully Tina does remember bits or feelings from her time with memory loss, so they can at least try to be better towards each other. Please post soon.
